John Armstrong, MD, FACS
Executive Director, OMMIR
John H. Armstrong, MD, FACS, FCCP, MAMSE, professor of surgery in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, is a fourth generation U.S. Army veteran who completed his decorated service as a colonel and director of the award-winning U.S. Army Trauma Training Center in Miami, FL. He is committed to helping the Department of Defense and its military health system answer their research questions to save lives, restore function, and promote health for Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines, their families, and veterans.
He is a US health leader, trauma surgeon, public health innovator, and medical educator. He served as Florida’s surgeon general and secretary of health and is a past member of the U.S. Defense Health Board, past chair of its Trauma and Injury Subcommittee, and past member of the executive committee of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) committee on trauma. He is a member of MCOM’s Academy of Distinguished Educators, an adjunct professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, and a member of the Excelsior Surgical Society, the ACS military chapter.
He is a graduate of Princeton University, the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and the US Army Command and General Staff College. He performed his surgical residency at Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii; his trauma/surgical critical care fellowship at the Ryder Trauma Center, University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital; and his Master Educators in Medical Education Fellowship at the University of Florida. He served for six years on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for Surgery. He believes that education, training, and research drive change for the better.

Ms. Burgess leads administration and operational coordination for OMMIR. She plays a pivtol role in bridging research, strategy, and external partnerships with the DoD and other stakeholders.
