Application process

We offer a five-year, non-pyramidal general surgery residency training program, approved to graduate seven chief residents in general surgery each year. The internship has ten positions: seven categorical general surgery residents and four preliminary positions. There are also two preliminary positions available for a second clinical year of general surgery.

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), and we participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

For more information about the NRMP or ERAS visit the following websites:

Foreign Medical Graduates

Graduates of medical schools from countries other than the United States or Canada must present evidence of final certification by the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). The University of South Florida only accepts a J1 visa.

Dates

The application deadline is October 31st. Interview sessions will be virtual and will be conducted on November 6th, 13th, and December 4th, 11th, 18th.

Interviews

We typically screen nearly 1,200 applicants and will invite approximately 100 for interviews. All interviews will be virtual this year. Candidates will have the opportunity to interview with both residents and faculty. Questions and discussions about any aspect of our program are welcome.

Requirements for application review are as follows:

  • USMLE Step 1 & 2 results (We strongly encourage medical students to take the USMLE Step II as early in the fourth year as possible. There is no minimum score; however, it is highly competitive so a better score will help support a personal interview.)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Medical school transcript
  • Dean's letter
  • Personal statement

Information Sessions

Because we are unable to host the usual pre-interview dinner/boat tour with the residents, we will be hosting multiple virtual information sessions run by residents to give the candidates an opportunity to learn more about the program and life in Tampa in an informal setting. Please follow our social media pages for updates regarding dates/times.
