Message from the Residency Program Director

Welcome to the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine.

Our faculty work as a team to provide outstanding post-graduate education in the setting of broad spectrum, state-of-the-art clinical services. The group strives to achieve ideal balance as focused educators, busy treating physicians, and creative investigators.

The USF orthopaedic residency program offers exceptional training opportunities at a variety of superb institutions, including Tampa General Hospital, Florida Orthopaedic Institute, Moffitt Cancer Center, Brandon Regional Hospital, AdventHealth Tampa, AdventHealth Carrollwood, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, and the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Medical Center. These facilities are co-located within a short drive of the main campus of the University of South Florida. Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has been ranked as one of the top 50 hospitals nationally in six medical specialties including orthopaedics. The residents spend the majority of their time at TGH and this is where the academic offices are located.

We believe our role as academic orthopaedic physicians is to prepare orthopaedic leaders of the future as clinicians, surgeons, and investigators. This approach puts our trainees on the cutting edge of orthopaedic advancement and benefits our patients and the profession, now and for years to come.

You are invited to review our website and associated links, in order to gain further insight into the educational and clinical services provided by the USF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. We hope this information serves as a learning resource for patients and physicians alike.

Message from the Chairman

In March of 2015, Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI) and the USF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, have entered into a long term academic, research, and educational affiliation. The goal of this partnership is to create an academic and research Center of Excellence in Musculo-Skeletal Medicine for the Tampa Bay community.

Creating a pre-eminent Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, unrivaled regionally, and with a significant national stature is an obtainable reality for USF. Building on the clinical and academic excellence of the Florida Orthopaedic Institute, as well as a highly competitive USF orthopaedic residency, the foundations for long lasting success are already present. Integration of the various entities into a cohesive unit can distinguish USF in all three pillars of modern academic medicine: compassionate clinical excellence; superior educational opportunities (for medical students, orthopaedic residents, and post graduate fellows), and scientific advancement.

FOI’s faculty are strong in clinical skills as well as proven academic scholarship. With the support of both the faculty and the University, the USF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery will become nationally prominent department in a short time. I am committed, as are all the members of FOI, to achieve these goals. We expect nothing less than for you to become one of the best academically prepared and surgically trained orthopaedic residents in the country.
