Program History

Since its launch in October 2022, DISTA has been dedicated to public health workforce development through comprehensive, multidisciplinary, competency-based, and tiered training for public health professionals at all stages of their careers.

Interactive Timeline

  • In its first year, DISTA focused on building the foundational components of the training curriculum. Initial efforts centered on developing asynchronous online training for new DIS (DIS 1) and in-person leadership development for experienced professionals (DIS 4). The curriculum grew beyond original plans in collaboration with the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) and feedback from STD Program Regional Workshops.

    Key accomplishments

    • Developed 22 asynchronous online courses for DIS 1 and 4
    • Piloted the in-person Leadership Development I course for supervisors and managers
  • Building on this foundation, DISTA expanded its training efforts to include another unit of online asynchronous training modules and a new Leadership Development II in-person course.

    • Launched the full DIS 1 training experience:
      • 18 asynchronous online courses
      • One Live Virtual session
      • Weeklong in-person DIScover training
    • Developed 20 new online courses for DIS 2
    • Offered Leadership Development I and Leadership Development II in-person courses
  • In Year 3, DISTA developed the remaining DIS 3 and DIS 4 courses while continuing to deliver virtual and in-person training year-round.

    Key accomplishments

    • Trained more than 70 new DIS and public health professionals through the DIS 1 experience
    • Trained more than 20 leaders and rising leaders through Leadership Development I and II in-person courses
    • Launched 20 asynchronous online courses for DIS 2
    • Developed more than 20 online courses for DIS 3 and 4
  • As the curriculum expanded and was offered to the broader public health workforce, DISTA became Driving Impact through Strategic Training in Applied Public Health, a reflection of DISTA’s purpose, goals, and values. Looking ahead DISTA will continue to grow and refine its offerings, providing a complete suite of training modules (DIS 1-4) tailored to meet the evolving needs of the public health workforce. As an innovative and sustainable model, DISTA is designed to scale across various settings and levels of experience, supporting public health professionals at every stage of their careers.
