Biography

Dr. Cheng an Associate Professor in Department of Pharmaceutical Science, College of Pharmacy at the University of South Florida (USF). He received his first Ph.D. degree in computational medicinal chemistry in the Chinese Academy of Science in 2003. He obtained his second Ph.D. in biophysics in 2010 at the University of Virginia. He has also received postdoc training at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and Yale University. His research interests are in the areas of drug discovery and development using computational methods (including molecular docking, pharmacophore mapping, and machine learning). More specifically, his lab uses genomic data and cheminformatics approaches to identify already approved drugs to treat a different disease (drug repurposing). Additionally, his lab uses genomic data and FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) to investigate possible drug-drug interactions. Dr. Cheng has published over 80 research papers in prestigious journals including Nature, Neuron, J. Am. Chem. Soc, and J. Med. Chem. His work has been more than 3,700 times. Presently, Dr. Cheng is the editor-in-chief of the Open Bioinformatics Journal (Bentham Publisher) and has been serving as an editorial board member of several journals including Scientific Reports and Genes.
