Biography

Michaela McGuire joined the University of South Florida as a Postdoctoral Fellow in epidemiology at the College of Public Health in August 2025. She currently works on several projects related to malaria risk factors and transmission dynamics in Cameroon and Ghana in the Stresman laboratory under the guidance of Dr. Gillian Stresman. Her research interests include the direct and indirect effects of malaria prevention programs and the design of effective prevention strategies in urban environments. She completed her MPH in 2017 and PhD in Public Health with an epidemiology concentration in 2025, both through the University of South Florida. Her dissertation work focused on the non-malarial effects of malaria chemoprevention program which used data from an implementation study in Cameroon as part of the Plus project.

Research Interests

  • Michaela McGuire's research interests focus on malaria prevention in endemic areas, with a focus on understanding the factors that drive transmission and identifying populations most at risk. Her work aims to assist with subnational tailoring efforts by examining which vector control methods are most effective in differing contexts. Alongside this, she investigates the wider health effects of malaria prevention activities, particularly when delivered alongside other interventions such as the Essential Program on Immunization (EPI). This focuses on how the delivery of malaria prevention measures may affect uptake of co-delivered interventions and explores the potential for additional health effects.
