Before coming to USF 18 years ago, Dr Van Elswyk was a partner in a six-person medical group for the practice of obstetrics and gynecology in northern New Jersey. After 20 years, he retired to Florida and began to practice his passion of teaching here at the college. He is the primary teacher of the course Survey of Human Disease. He enjoys teaching and believes his course is incredibly important for the student because it discusses so many significant topics that touch the lives of every student, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. He also is the instructor for Medical Terminology and the supervisor for Sex, Health and Decision Making. He uses Twitter to tweet current medical articles that are related to his lectures and class discussion and currently has over 2700 followers. He was voted the Golden Key award by the USF student body in the beginning years of his teaching at USF. He also enjoys being physically active with his two sons who are nationally ranked triathletes and he is also the sponsor for the USF triathlon club. He and his wife are avid photographers and enjoy sharing their love of photography, traveling and spending time with their Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rhett.
