Biography

Dr. Jaward holds a BSc degree (with Honors) in Chemistry from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone in June 1991, MSc in Environmental Science (summa cum laude) from IHE/Utrecht University in the Netherlands in March 1996, and a PhD in Environmental Chemistry from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom in June 2004. He joined the College of Public Health as an Assistant Professor in May 2006. Over the last decade, Dr. Jaward has focused his professional and career interests on the science and management of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Working in collaboration with researchers in several universities and research institutes in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and USA, he has contributed to advancing knowledge on the sources, fate and behavior of both legacy and emerging POPs in the environment (air, water, soil and sediment); the health effects of these POPs and the determination and fate of micro-constituents in reclaimed water. Dr. Jaward has published many quality articles on POPs in excellent peer-reviewed journals, have several manuscripts in preparation or under review for publication, published a book chapter on POPs in the developing world, written many research reports, and presented papers at many scholarly conferences, workshops and seminars. His next step is to engage in the application of this knowledge for safe guarding the global environment and mitigating long-term effects of POPs. At USF, Dr. Jaward teaches graduate courses on Environmental Health Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry Methods, Environmental Analytical Laboratory and Environmental Research Interdisciplinary Colloquium (ERIC). ERIC is a cross-college seminar series that brings together USF researchers, students, and community members for discussions of environmental research and applications. Talks are archived and available for free to the community at http://netcast.usf.edu/ERIC. Dr. Jaward is also very active in professional societies and community service. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. He is a reviewer for many scientific journals and also the editor-in-chief of the African Journal of Environmental Assessment and Management.
