Biography

With a professional experience of more than 20 years, Dr. Mehmood has extensive academic, technical and professional expertise in planning, implementing and monitoring and evaluation of health care programs. She is a trained surgeon and public health researcher with a special interest in health systems strengthening, implementation science, quality of health services, and monitoring and evaluation of care interventions. Dr. Mehmood has made significant contributions to the science and practice of injury prevention, trauma care, mass casualty management and disaster response in low resource settings. She has led many innovative projects such as the development of injury surveillance systems, development and implementation of trauma registries, hospital disaster preparedness, and contributed to the assessment of urban disaster response capacity. She has a multidimensional research portfolio ranging from trauma outcome research, health systems evaluation and strengthening, injury prevention, development and implementation of digital surveillance tools, quality of trauma care, advocacy, and policy analysis. Dr. Mehmood has previously served as Associate Director at the International Injury Research Unit, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA. There, she led the development and implementation of digital data collection for monitoring and evaluation of road injury risk factors for Bloomberg Initiative on Global Road Safety. Furthermore, she utilized rapidly expanding repertoire of m-Health tools to develop hospital based digital trauma registries implemented in Oman, Kenya, India and Uganda and included standardized injury classifications, scoring systems and outcome measures in multicenter databases to help measure burden and quality of care. She led and participated in a variety of training and capacity development initiatives for clinicians, allied health workers, public health researchers and graduate students. Her major areas of research include: Emergency and trauma care Emergency response and Disaster Management Injury prevention and surveillance Utilization of mHealth tools to improve surveillance Dr. Mehmood has also worked closely with the WHO to assist in promotion of disaster planning and preparedness among Eastern European countries, as well as injury prevention and trauma care as a member of Global Alliance for Care of the Injured. Using a collaborative approach, she helped develop a framework for prevention and control of occupational injuries in migrant workers of Qatar with an emphasis on data-driven policy making. She is currently leading the Global Disaster Management, Humanitarian Relief and Homeland Security concentration at the USF, College of Public Health.
