Shaping the future of health
The Morsani College of Medicine has active research programs in basic, translational, and clinical sciences. Research is carried out in Departments, Institutes, Centers and at our Veterans Hospitals and our primary teaching facility, Tampa General Hospital. In addition, there are rich collaborations with the Colleges of Public Health, Nursing and Pharmacy as well as the USF College of Arts and Sciences.
Our goal is to pursue new knowledge in the biomedical sciences, clinical sciences, and healthcare delivery, relevant to human health and disease. Please explore our research initiatives using the tabs above. The resources tab provides information for current faculty to facilitate research efforts.

Research Day
Celebrating health science research
Despite their different questions and disciplines, they shared a common goal: advancing the science that shapes how people live and receive care.
Those conversations, and hundreds more like them, filled the USF Marshall Student Center during the 36th annual USF Health Research Day, the university’s largest celebration of health sciences research.

Potential Targets of Naturally Acquired Plasmodium vivax Transmission - Reducing Antibodies
CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate the association of IgM with naturally acquired transmission-blocking immunity and highlight potential targets of P. vivax transmission-reducing antibodies. Further investigations are needed to validate the targets, elucidate the underlying mechanisms and facilitate the research on transmission-blocking vaccines.
PrPC limits APP delivery to the plasma membrane and alters its processing to facilitate aβ release
Several lines of evidence suggest that the cellular isoform of prion protein (PrP^(C)) plays one or more roles in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). We previously found, in mouse neuroblastoma N2a cells that express human APP carrying the Swedish mutation (N2a-APPswe), that PrP^(C) expression correlated with the secretion of Aβ(42) peptide, the product of proteolytic processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) that is central to AD. To determine whether PrP^(C) modulates APP processing to affect...
Interleukin-1 Receptor Accessory Protein Amplifies Trophoblast Inflammatory Signaling in Inflammation-Associated Preterm Birth
CONCLUSIONS: These findings identify trophoblast IL-1RAP as an amplifier of IL-1β-mediated inflammatory signaling and support further investigation of IL-1RAP in inflammation-associated preterm birth.
Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker Disease With F198S Mutation Diagnosis on Repeat Genetic Testing: A Case Report
Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker (GSS) disease is a rare hereditary autosomal dominant prion disease characterized by cerebellar ataxia, dysarthria, and progressive dementia. We report a case of GSS disease in a 46-year-old patient who presented with four to six months of ataxia, dysarthria, intermittent tongue biting, and frontal headaches. His DaTscan (dopamine transporter scan) showed absent dopamine uptake in the left putamen and mildly decreased activity in the right putamen, a finding that..
USF researchers develop AI system that predicts ACL injuries before they happen
USF researchers are developing an AI-powered wearable that uses machine learning and real-time feedback to help identify risky movements and reduce the risk of ACL injuries before they occur.

Can dry needling relieve multiple sclerosis pain? USF Health researchers are testing it
USF Health researchers are studying whether dry needling can safely reduce chronic leg pain and improve mobility in people with multiple sclerosis. Led by Amir Tabatabaei and the USF Health School of Physical Therapy, the study hopes to validate a new approach to managing one of the disease’s most common and disruptive symptoms.
