Residency Program
We are pleased to announce the USF Anesthesiology Residency has received accreditation from the ACGME and will accept its first class of residents beginning July 1, 2024.
The University of South Florida Anesthesiology Residency at Tampa General Hospital is a four-year residency program with a focus on graduating skilled Anesthesiologists who are trusted, sought after clinicians with a mindset rooted in academic excellence, quality improvement, and research.
John A. Hodgson, MD, FASA | Program Director
Upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy, Dr. Hodgson entered medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Hodgson remained at the National Capital Consortium, in Bethesda, for his residency training in Anesthesiology and simultaneously obtained advanced training in Cardio-Thoracic Anesthesiology and obtained board certification in Transesophageal Echocardiography.
Shortly after residency graduation, Dr. Hodgson became Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda. In 2009, Dr. Hodgson deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, as part of a Forward Resuscitative Surgical System Shock Trauma Platoon in support of U.S. Marine Corps operations in the region.
Upon return from Afghanistan, Dr. Hodgson became the Associate Program Director of the National Capital Consortium Anesthesiology Residency. Dr. Hodgson served in this position for many years before being chosen as Program Director in 2019.
Dr. Hodgson is thrilled to be the Program Director of the Anesthesiology Residency at USF Health in partnership with Tampa General Hospital. He is committed to the success of every resident and believes that the program will develop outstanding clinicians who will be poised to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Program Aims
Our program is dedicated to our residents achieving a balance of clinical experience, didactics, and professional development to become well-rounded clinicians ready for board certification and to take on leadership roles within our specialty as clinicians, researchers, or educators.
Residents will connect with members of the community they serve on a daily basis with mentorship from our experienced and diverse staff.
Our residents will develop their skills in a safe, controlled, and educational environment to enhance their experiences of caring for patients and prepare for future skill assessments and lifelong learning.

Education Overview
USF Health Anesthesiology Residents have access to dedicated faculty and a robust lecture series that will prepare them for success on board examinations and provide an excellent fund of knowledge that will serve them throughout their careers.
Didactic sessions take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and are split between Board Review, Quality Assurance Conferences, Journal Clubs, Point of Care Ultrasound Training, Grand Rounds, and Simulation Experiences. Lectures are faculty led and moderated to ensure the highest quality and most up-to-date content is reviewed.
Resident Well-being
Our department and faculty are dedicated to your development as a clinician and as a person. We place an emphasis on a balanced approach to education and training. We host several department gatherings throughout the year and have cultivated a family-like atmosphere in which we truly care and look out for one another. We want you to have a rich experience outside the hospital with family, friends, and colleagues.
Clinical Training

A foundational year in the basics of Medicine and Surgery. Interns will enjoy a broad exposure to all aspects of Medicine outside of Anesthesiology that are the building blocks for a well-rounded clinician and Anesthesiologist. This year will strengthen skills learned in medical school, provide fundamental knowledge to build upon during residency, and give interns the opportunity to form relationships with their colleagues in other specialties.

A foundational year in the basics of Anesthesiology. This year, residents will become adept at functioning in the OR in an environment that fosters learning and growth through close supervision. Additionally, residents will rotate in several peri-operative environments which underscores the Anesthesiologists role as an expert not just in the OR, but in the Peri-operative environment as well.

An advanced year that will see residents dedicating a significant amount of time in Anesthesiology subspecialties. This year will hone skills necessary for treating patients with advanced disease requiring advanced procedures. These residents will begin to sharpen their leadership skills as they begin to have opportunities to mentor and model professionalism to junior residents.

Residents will begin their transition to independent practice. They will find themselves as leaders within the program and will have the opportunity to select elective rotations in the advanced subspecialties.
Research
Residents will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of research and publish their own projects in connection with the robust department of research at the University of South Florida, which received over $480 million in research funding in last academic year alone. Our faculty will assist each resident in presenting their work at a national conference or publishing in a peer-reviewed journal. In addition, each resident will have the opportunity to perform a quality improvement project and an evidence based grand rounds with faculty mentorship.
Tampa General Hospital
As the region’s only level-1 trauma center, as well as the regional cardiac, burn, and transplant center, Tampa General Hospital provides a robust training platform for future Anesthesiologists. One of the highest volume medical centers in Florida, TGH is the site of over 8,000 deliveries per year, 200 surgeries per day, and is growing. This 1,100 bed hospital is set to undergo a $500 million addition with state-of-the-art operating rooms, ICUs, as well as clinical and educational space.
How to Apply
Very important information for applicants:
We are only able to consider applications from medical students expecting to graduate in 2024. This policy was established to ensure compliance with federal residency funding programs. We regret that we will be unable to accept applications from current interns, transfer applications from other residency programs, or medical school graduates from years prior to 2024. We also cannot accept applicants willing to repeat their PGY-1 year.
Applications for the residency are accepted through ERAS. Our committee will review all applications and extend invitations to interview. We will be exclusively conducting virtual interviews this season.

- Two letters of recommendation, at least one from an Anesthesiologist

Interviews will begin in November and continue through January on a rolling basis. Invitations will be sent through ERAS. Please schedule your interview through the ERAS scheduling tool.
