Overview

Our newly formed USF Health Morsani College of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of South Florida, led by Dr. Peter Wu, is poised to make significant strides in medical education, research and patient care.

Rooted within the Morsani College of Medicine, recognized as the fastest-rising medical school in both medical research and primary care over the past decade by U.S. News & World Report Academic Insights and situated within the Tampa Bay region's only academic medical center, we take pride in being an integral part of a health care hub that hosts the largest multispecialty group on the west coast of Florida. This strategic positioning provides unique opportunities for growth and places our department at the forefront of shaping the future of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine in the region.

We're excited to share that the USF Health Anesthesiology Residency, recently accredited by the ACGME, will welcome its first class of residents beginning July 1, 2024. This four-year program, led by Dr. John Hodgson, focuses on graduating skilled anesthesiologists who embody academic excellence. Recruitment for applicants to the inaugural class has already begun.

We also aspire to contribute significantly to the advancement of medical knowledge. The Morsani College of Medicine is ranked in the top 50 medical schools across the nation for medical research, with a remarkable 75% increase in NIH-funded research over the past decade. MCOM investigators also contribute 70% of the university’s total research awards, highlighting our college’s commitment to impactful research.

Patient care is fundamental to our mission, and we approach it with dedication to providing the highest quality services. In partnership with our chief academic partner and primary teaching hospital, Tampa General Hospital, we are well-positioned to offer comprehensive and integrated care to a diverse patient population. Tampa General Hospital is the region's No. 1 hospital, recognized by U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals, and nationally ranked in the top 50 in six adult medical specialties, many of which are led or co-led by USF Health faculty physicians, demonstrating a strong partnership in delivering top-quality care. In addition, five more specialties were recognized as “high performing” and among the top 10% in the nation.

As you step into our newly formed Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, you join us on an exciting journey of growth, innovation and excellence.
