A retired Captain in the United States Navy, Dr. Hodgson brings nearly three decades of military and academic medicine experience, with a focus on high-acuity perioperative care, graduate medical education, and health system leadership. Dr. Hodgson earned his Bachelor of Science with distinction in Political Science from the United States Naval Academy before receiving his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He completed his anesthesiology residency within the National Capital Consortium, where he also trained in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. He previously served as Program Director of the National Capital Consortium Anesthesiology Residency, overseeing the education and training of more than 250 Army, Navy, and Air Force residents across a multi-institutional platform that included Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the National Institutes of Health, and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Throughout his military career, Dr. Hodgson held numerous leadership roles at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, including President of the Medical Staff, Chair of the Executive Committee, and Medical Director of the Main Operating Room. He led major institutional quality and safety initiatives and played a central role in modernizing clinical operations and communication systems. Clinically, he has extensive experience in complex cardiac, transplant, trauma, and obstetric anesthesia, both in tertiary care centers and austere deployed environments, including combat casualty care in Afghanistan. From 2016 to 2023, Dr. Hodgson served as Anesthesiology consultant to the White House Medical Unit, providing care to the President, Vice President, Cabinet members, and their families across three administrations. His work included participation in the care of President Donald Trump during his COVID-19 hospitalization and serving as the Anesthesiologist for President Joseph Biden requiring temporary transfer of executive authority under the 25th Amendment. Dr. Hodgson is board certified in anesthesiology and advanced perioperative echocardiography and is a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. His academic contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and national presentations, with scholarly interests spanning perioperative risk stratification, crisis management, artificial intelligence in medical education, and quality improvement. As Program Director at the University of South Florida, Dr. Hodgson led the successful development and initial accreditation of a new anesthesiology residency program, expanding to 48 residents.
