Course Information
The TGH-USF People Development Institute (PDI) offers education and development for ALL TGH team members- at all levels and all roles. Courses are offered in a variety of subject matters and the institute is continually adding new courses and areas of concentration within the course catalog.
Course Curriculum
Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and the University of South Florida (USF) have combined resources to develop a unique, comprehensive people development institute that will support all team members’ career aspirations and equip them with the skills to drive their development and achieve TGH’s vision to be the safest and most innovative academic health system in America. Several courses in the PDI catalog provide the option to earn continuing education (CE) credit. Courses identified with the CEB 20 # have CE contact hours available for specific licensed health disciplines. To receive CE credit, you must be present for the entire program time. Please note that you are also required to complete the course evaluation survey and provide your professional discipline and license number.

- Every day we try to convince people of something – patients, peers, projects, even our kids. - This 2.5-hour course will cover the role of the manager in health care organizations. Three prominent perspectives on the essential functions of the manager in all industries will be discussed, including Systems Thinking, Peter Drucker’s Five Basic Functions of the Manager, and Evidence-based Management. This session will also describe how health care management is different than management in other sectors, including the health care manager’s role on the interprofessional team. Finally, this session will review the skills necessary for managers to lead health care organizations.

- In values-based patient-centered care, an individual’s specific values, health needs, and desired health outcomes are the driving force behind all health care decisions. Patients are partners with their healthcare team and through active collaboration and shared decision-making, patients, families, and healthcare providers design and manage a comprehensive care plan. This course will introduce participants to the key concepts of values-based patient-centered care, including what are values, why it matters, and how increasing their values-based patient-centered care competencies it can yield positive outcomes for themselves, their teams, and their patients.

- Public Speaking

- The course would focus on the fundamentals of public address by examining the communication process, assessing the functions within the parts of speech, discussing non-verbal communication in public address, and adapting communication apprehension strategies to reduce anxiety while presenting a speech. - Navigating Difficult Conversations with Patients and their Families
- September 24 from 1:00-4:00pm EST at PDI 125- Back Classroom
- This course will introduce participants to the art of having difficult conversation with patients and their families. Healthcare professionals are met with some of the most challenging topics for conversation with patients. How do we navigate those conversations in a compassionate and constructive way? What approach to the discussions is most helpful to the patient and their families? In this course, participants will learn tips to improve their communication, to decrease stress around difficult conversations, and improve patient centered communication and care. Whether the conversation is about Advanced Directives, illness management, death and dying, family strain, or procedure related fear and concern, a healthcare practitioner should be ready to navigate those discussions in a way that is calming and helpful to the patient and their family.

- Healthcare is most often a team effort, yet much team dysfunction continues to exist. Evidence for this can be found in many clinical settings. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is becoming a known quantity that is imperative for individual and group function. It accounts for a significant portion of what moves good leadership to greatness. - Everyone has said to themselves, “There’s got to be a better way to this.” And yet, many team members are reluctant to give feedback, ask questions, or make suggestions for new ways to work. This 3-hour course will cover topics associated with the 4 Ps of continuous operational improvement, including 1) philosophy, 2) processes, 3) people, and 4) problem-solving. Team members will learn to expose wasteful practices within systems, to identify root causes of mistakes, and to solve problems on their own. - Diagnosing Conflict

- This session is a practical application of conflict management for participants who want to better understand and navigate conflict. Participants will identify a conflict and take a journey in diagnosing their own conflict considering the type of conflict present (personal, task, process). Additionally, participants will consider potential symptoms including perceptions, internal dialogue, and emotions. Once symptoms and diagnosis are addressed, participants will identify treatment options including avoiding, accommodating, competing, compromising, and collaborating. - Mindfulness and Self-Compassion

- This course introduces fresh perspectives on mindfulness and self-compassion. Participants will engage in meditative exercises to increasing their awareness of inner mental experiences and build familiarity with how mental states influence behavior. In addition, participants use meditative exercises to direct the stream of compassion within, even when encountering obstacles and disappointment. Together, we will discuss and challenge perspectives on perfection and imperfection, common humanity, suffering, joy, and especially, compassion.
