- Current malaria treatments are becoming less effective due to the evolution of drug resistance mechanisms and treatment failure which would result in millions of lost lives. My research attacks this problem from two directions: using chemogenomic screens to uncover all the pathways that may be targeted with drugs to kill malaria and by using RNA-seq to understand the mechanisms of drug resistance. A thorough understanding of all of malaria’s weak spots coupled with knowledge of malaria’s drug evasion strategies will allow the design of rational combination therapies immune to the evolution of drug resistance.
