Online MPH - Public Health PracticeThe Online MPH in Public Health Practice provides a real-world, learning experience in an academic online environment with other dedicated professionals. Many of our students are already active in public health careers. You may find our students at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, in foreign military locations, or in isolated rural communities. Wherever they may be located, they are simultaneously applying their academic coursework to real-life situations as they mitigate health risks, participate in health care programs and transform public health policy.
The Master of Public Health with a concentration in Public Health Practice (PHP) is a fully accredited program that provides an opportunity to develop public health practice leadership skills, learn advanced tools to help protect and improve the health of the greater community and expand your knowledge of modern health care organizations.
Academic public health practice is a field of scholarship that seeks to bring together the pragmatic needs of the practitioner and the production of scholarly inquiry to contribute to the welfare of populations. Our program at the University of South Florida, College of Public Health meets the particular needs of working public health professionals with an emphasis on the promotion of scholarship in public health practice.
Program OutlineOur curriculum provides the tools to work within the areas of surveillance, evaluation, education, and clinical care of national, state, and local populations.
Although similar to traditional MPH programs, the Public Health Practice curriculum not only incorporates core competencies, we tailor our courses to the unique needs of health care practitioners. The diversity of participants, background and expertise adds a unique dimension to the program and encourages the development of strong teams, study groups, discussion groups, and friendships in a challenging intellectual environment.
Final graduation requirements include completion of a supervised field experience, a written special project, and a comprehensive examination. A faculty advisor will assist each student in the planning and completion of a project that demonstrates research skill and integrates core competencies in an area of the student’s personal and professional interests.
The Field Experience may be completed at a location of your choice or through a planned group experience with other students, staff and faculty. Students from prior groups have traveled to such sites as Hawaii, Costa Rica, Cuba, Panama, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During the final 5-day, on-campus requirement, students will complete the PHP Seminar, a culminating experience integrating topics and skills introduced in prior classes along with the development and enhancement of tools needed to be a leader in tomorrow’s public health care system. Students will also take the College-wide Comprehensive exam at this time.
This unique learning opportunity is designed to provide a vehicle for those working in the public health and the healthcare arenas to meet the academic, research, and training needs of the public health community and to earn the Masters in Public Health degree (MPH).
