Veteran to BS in Nursing

Thank you so much for your interest in the Veteran to BS in Nursing program. We recently received notification from Health Research Service Administration regarding federal funding to support the development of this exciting program that prepares military and veteran medics and corpsmen as bachelor’s prepared registered nurses. It is an innovative and exciting program and we are very interested in having you apply for the program.

Richard Huff

Student Profile: Richard Huff

Richard Huff, MS, CRNA, received the 2012-2014 Jonas Veterans Healthcare Program Scholarship. Huff was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Base Nurse Corps in 2001, and was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq to serve as a Critical Care Air Transport Nurse (C-Cat) in 2003.

Student Profile: Matt Jenkins

Picture dirt roads, scrubby grass in the fields, palms trees, temperatures in the 80s, blue sky – sounds like a perfect Florida day, right? But that couldn’t be further from the truth for Matt Jenkins. It was September 2006 in Habbaniyah, Iraq and a turning point in the young Marine’s life. Only 50 yards from base, his friend stepped on 155mm artillery rigged IED (improvised explosive device), and he couldn’t save him. That day, Matt’s life changed forever.

As with many people who choose nursing as a profession, the need to help people in need is a strong motivating force. However, it wasn’t until his father developed colon cancer that Derrick made a life-changing decision of becoming a nurse.

Alicia G. Rossiter, MSN, FNP, PNP-BC, received the 2012-2014 Jonas Veterans Healthcare Program Scholarship. She has over 21 years in the military serving four years on active duty in the U.S. Army, and 17 years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

Jason Trudell, MS, CRNA, ARNP, Nurse Anesthesia Instructor at University of South Florida College of Nursing, was featured on the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists’ (AANA) website. Trudell was recognized for his deployment as a Captain with the U.S. Army in May 2012.

Student Profile: Benjamin Bell

Spring 2008 College of Nursing baccalaureate graduate Benjamin Bell was in the Army for five years and served as a Military Policeman and as a Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery before making the decision to become a nurse. Two of Bell’s sisters-in-law are nurse practitioners and helped get the ball rolling on Bell’s new career. Nursing would allow him to help people directly and hands on, one of his main reasons for wanting to become a nurse.
