The 2010 Lewis A. Barness Lecture and Fellows' Forum

-- April 22, 2010
Lecture and Fellows Forum

The 2010 Lewis A. Barness Lecture and Fellows’ Forum were held on April 15, 2010. This annual event honors Dr. Lewis A. Barness, who founded the USF Department of Pediatrics in 1972. Dr. Barness’ remarkable career, which has spanned more than 55 years, is filled with professional accolades and awards including the John Howland Medal from the American Pediatric Society, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Abraham Jacobi Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Joseph St. Geme Leadership Award given by 7 pediatric societies. He has been inducted into the Pediatrics Hall of Fame, which honors physicians who have made remarkable contributions to the practice of pediatrics.

This year’s speaker was Diana Bianchi, MD, Zucker Professor of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tufts University School of Medicine. Her lecture, entitled “Cell-Free Nucleic Acids: Beyond Biomarkers, Towards Fetal and Neonatal Personalized Medicine” described noninvasive prenatal diagnosis using cell-free nucleic acids in maternal blood and amniotic fluid. This area of research has already transitioned to clinical obstetric care, and Dr. Bianchi is a lead investigator in this exciting field. The lecture was followed by the Fellows’ Forum during which 1 junior faculty member and 7 fellows presented their research. Click here to view the program and the abstracts.
