William S.( Sandy) Quillen, PT, PhD, SCS, is the director of the USF School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, and an associate dean of the USF College of Medicine. He was among the first physical therapists in the United States to be designated a sports certified specialist (SCS) by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.
A frequent author and lecturer, Dr. Quillen co-edited the textbook Athletic Injuries & Rehabilitation, and has published and presented extensively in the fields of physical therapy and sports medicine. He is the principal co-investigator of a new grant from the U.S. Department of Education Rehabilitative Services Administration to improve education and research of prosthetics and orthotics.
In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Quillen has a limited clinical practice in the USF Physical Therapy Center focusing on care of the young athlete. In that role, Dr. Quillen has provided community education for parents and coaches of youth sports organizations on sports first aid and injury prevention.
Dr. Quillen is a retired Commander in the United States Navy, and has held a variety of academic positions prior to his appointment at USF. These include Assistant Professor, US Army-Baylor University Physical Therapy Program, Assistant Professor, School of Physical Therapy, Texas Women's University, Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Physical Therapy, College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, OH and most recently as Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Physical Therapy, Indiana University School of Medicine. His doctoral training is in Sports Medicine from the University of Virginia.
