Florida Prevention Research Center

Center Overview

The Florida Prevention Research Center is designated as one of 26 Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Centers in the nation funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Florida Prevention Research Center (FPRC) uses community-based prevention marketing (CBPM) for systems change to develop, adapt, implement, evaluate, and disseminate evidence-based approaches to strengthen state and local health departments’ and community coalitions’ capacity for sustained disease prevention and health promotion. The FPRC’s health priority will be the reduction of cancer disparities, and the core research project for the next five years will focus on the promotion of colorectal cancer screening (CRCS).

This research study is a collaborative effort between the Florida PRC, the Florida Department of Health in Hillsbourough, Pasco and Pinellas counties, the American Cancer Society, and a Colorectal Cancer Prevention Community Committee (CCC). Researchers work regularly with these groups to promote colon cancer screening.

Throughout the process, the (CCC) articulates the voice of the community to FPRC staff and guide research activities. The following list includes the organizations members of the CCC.

In accordance with the CBPM framework, the CCC guides the decision-making process. Members use their understanding of community needs to make all key program decisions: identifying priority populations, reviewing and selecting EBIs, assisting with recruitment of participants, providing feedback on intervention strategies and tactics, monitoring and evaluating the selected intervention.

Center Objectives:

  • Develop community-based partnerships to improve public health practices by increasing the capacity to design, conduct, and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention programs
  • Develop, evaluate, and disseminate the CBPM approach to health promotion and disease prevention interventions
  • Advance the scientific foundation of health promotion and disease prevention programs and services
  • Community-Based Prevention Marketing
  • Building Local Capacity for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion
