Dr. Unnasch's lab focuses on vector-borne diseases such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis and human filarial infections. His past accomplishments include sequencing and annotation of the Onchocerca volvulus and Brugia malayi genomes. He developed a unique transient infection system for B. malayi and used this to study promoter structure and regulation, mRNA processing and MiRNA function. Currently, he is working to develop new treatment options for filarial parasites by targeting the ecdysteroid signaling pathway to disrupt parasite reproduction and development. He is also investigating the molecular basis of the relationship between B. malayi and its wolbachia endosymbied with the goal of identifying new ways to disrupt this essential relationship.
