USF Genomics is comprised of an interdisciplinary team of researchers actively engaged in genomics research. It is a uniquely collaborative environment in which representatives from a variety of academic disciplines use a wide range of approaches (e.g. bench work, bioinformatics, computational modeling, systems biology) to promote understanding of genome structure and function and to use genomic sciences to answer complex questions relating to health, disease and environmental challenges. USF Genomics is not an independent academic program, rather it is an informal community of researchers from the following USF colleges and departments:
Students wishing to join USF Genomics should review the descriptions for each faculty member listed in the Researchers links and explore the corresponding department websites. Prospective students may then apply to any degree program(s) of interest. Details for each degree program with genomics-related elements are listed below.
The MSPH program is a research degree that provides a focus in research design, data collection, analysis and application of research in public health intended to improve and protect the health of populations. It is designed to instruct students in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. It prepares students for jobs in academic public health, as well as public health industry.
The MPH degree is the primary professional degree in the field of public health. Students are taught concepts and skills necessary for later jobs in professional public health settings. The MPH degree is offered in each COPH department.
The MS in Biotechnology is an innovative degree program that focuses on preparing students for science-based careers outside of traditional academia. Students are trained in innovative thinking and workforce-relevant skills that appeal to industry employers. This program was specially designed with input from leading organizations to produce employees that fit the unique demands of industrial science.
The MS in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is an interdisciplinary program designed to equip students with an understanding of both traditional biology and computer sciences. Students benefit from both theory based learning and real-work experience through a combination of coursework and a required internship. This program prepares students for careers both in industry and academia.
This one year program is an intensive course in basic and molecular scientific methods. Students have the opportunity to choose a concentration in Aging and Neuroscience, Molecular Medicine, or Women’s Health. The program is designed to prepare students for future education or research positions.
Students select to pursue their degree program in one of the listed departments:
(The College of Arts and Sciences is composed of many different schools and departments. The following list highlights only those departments that house USF Genomics faculty)
This thesis-based program introduces students to basic research concepts in the following concentrations: Ecology and Evolution, Environmental and Ecological Microbiology, or Physiology and Morphology.
