The Office of Educational Technology and Assessment is committed to providing a collaborative environment that supports faculty and students to effectively use technology in their online courses to positively influence their teaching/learning experience.

  • Analyze

    Ask Important Questions

    Before any course is formatted for the web there are some important questions for the department/instructor.

    • What is the purpose for creating or moving this course online?
    • What are the course goals and objectives?
    • Is this a stand-alone online course or is it part of an online degree/certificate program?
    • If the goal of the course is to meet certain competencies, the course objectives have to ensure that students are able to meet these competencies successfully.

    • Who is your audience?
    • What skills or knowledge does the audience already have?
    • What do the audience need to do to reach the objectives?
    • What are the expectations for the audience when completing the course?
    • How many will be going through the course or program that you are creating?
  • Design

    Build course roadmap with instructional designer

    • Course instructor and instructional designer work as a team to develop online course
    • An Initial meeting focuses on the course structure, design and the instructor’s approach to course
    • An instructional designer provides several suggestions to enhance course quality, course interaction, student participation, assessments and practice activities.
    • In addition, instructional designer will provide technology know-how on what works best for each course element mentioned above.
    • Instructor and instructional designer will create a production schedule for development of course materials.
    • Instructors have access to a multimedia and distance learning studio to create and build course materials using the latest technology tools and software.
    • Once course design and structure is in place, the course instructor will provide raw content materials to designer who will develop files for web distribution.
    • Instructional designer will build a course website keeping the instructor in the loop at all times
    • Instructional designer will provide input based on Minimum Standards for Online Courses
  • Develop

    Learn about technology and tools available

    • Instructional design to ensure course integrity.
    • Assure course is aligned and instructionally sound (Objectives-Content-Practice-Assessment).
    • Technology and tools are chosen by instructional designer based on student preferences and sound learning principles.
  • Implement

    What to expect during the semester

    • As instructors, expect to stay virtually connected to your students 24/7
    • Since students are physically absent in a classroom, expect to get questions about the logistics of the course. What you may know and assume, may need to be explained, and again explained to your students several times. Understand that preparation is key when it comes to online course development.
    • Technology support for students is provided by your course instructional designer. Students will be guaranteed a response within 24 hours after submitting a technical question.
    • Exam support over the weekend and evening hours are provided on request from instructor.
  • Evaluate

    Assess your course against COPH Minimum Standards

    • The COPH Minimum Standards for Online Courses is document that helps assure quality and consistency of all COPH online courses. This will serve as a guide for the instructional designer as he/she helps prepare your course. At the end of the semester, the instructional designer will provide an online course report that will identify areas of improvement.
