Skanska Receives First Sunshine State for Nemours Children's Hospital Project

The Florida division of Skanska received its first Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award in July. The international project development and construction company, one of the ten largest in the world, is currently building Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando. The 630,000 square-foot, 95-bed facility is a LEED® project scheduled for completion in June 2012. It is also part of the developing Lake Nona Science & Technology Park, a 600-acre medical community that will include the University of Central Florida's College of Medicine, a University of Florida Academic and Research Center, Orlando VA Medical Center, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and M.D. Anderson Orlando Cancer Research Center.

This is the first time Skanska has worked with the USF SafetyFlorida consultation program. Javier Duran, an environmental health and safety (EH&S) coordinator with Skanska, had previous experience with the program and recommended a consultation for the Nemours project.

Pat Stark, a USF SafetyFlorida safety and health consultant, advised Duran and Norberto Rodriguez, EH&S manager, during the process. Rodriguez says the consultation helped them tremendously, particularly since the company is seeking the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18000, an international health and safety management standard. "We received a lot of good insight. Our safety is very thorough, yet this opened our eyes to a different perspective. The whole process was an excellent learning tool, and we are recommending our subcontractors use the program as well."

Skanska also seeks the benefits of consultation for other projects it has in the Sunshine State, including a project underway in Tampa. "I would recommend this any day and twice on Sunday," says Rodriguez. "It evaluates our safety from A to Z, from our written programs to talking with our employees. This has been nothing but excellent for us."
