Clancy & Theys Construction Company (C&T) is a general contractor and construction manager that puts its safety success to work. Headquartered in Raleigh, NC, with division offices throughout the southeast, including Orlando, C&T has earned its first Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award from USF SafetyFlorida. Using this recognition to its advantage, C&T Safety Manager Manuel Morales says, "We tell our clients about our safety program and reference the award in our bid process. It gives us more prestige."

Morales contacted USF SafetyFlorida in January, after learning about the program through the USF OSHA Training Institute Education Center where he took classes. "I felt we were ready," Morales says about initiating the visit. "We have a good safety program."
Orlando is C&T's first division to invite a state consultation program in for an on-site inspection. Now that they are a Sunshine State winner, Morales says they are already aspiring towards their next goal, OSHA's SHARP certification. "We are absolutely working on it."
Morales says the Sunshine State Safety award places the company "one step above" their competitors. It also earned the Orlando office corporate recognition and increased management's awareness about the benefits of safety.
The Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award was created in 2006 by USF SafetyFlorida. Approximately 40 firms earn this honor annually for implementing safety initiatives that better protect employees on the job. To qualify, a business should request and receive a complete on-site consultation survey and employ at least one person at the worksite to be evaluated. Additionally, the business should have no willful, repeat or willful-repeat citations within 24 months of the consultation and no serious citations related to injury or exposure within 12 months of the consultation.
