Based in Miami, Gabriel Garcia serves as a USF SafetyFlorida Safety and Health Consultant to employers in South Florida. Mr. Garcia performs site interventions/inspections focused on OSHA standards and best practices for workplace safety and health management systems. He develops and conducts programmatic training and evaluates safety and health program management activities for small, privately owned companies. These businesses rely on Gabe for technical support and hazard control assistance. In return, he provides the business owners with comprehensive reports outlining ways to improve and enhance safety and health management systems. Gabe assists clients in Spanish throughout the state.
Mr. Garcia started his Health and Safety career in 1981 in the US Air Force and continued with the Florida Department of Health (FDOH). Since then he has put together over 30 years of Public Health, Environmental Health, Emergency Management, Occupational Health and Safety experience, including working for both the 482nd Medical Squadron and 482nd Civil Engineers as their safety manager and the FDOH as its Emergency Coordinator.
His experience in health and safety allowed Mr. Garcia to develop a facility assessment form that was adopted by the US Air Force in 1992. Also in 2006, Mr. Garcia applied his experience in Emergency Management and developed the hurricane plan template which is currently being used by USF as the HurriPlanner to facilitate small business in developing its own Emergency Action Plan.
In addition, Mr. Garcia is lending his experience in redeveloping the University of South Florida’s SafetyWriter program. This Web-based program allows small businesses to develop and implement their company’s site-specific safety and health management plans.
Mr. Garcia firmly believes that a well-written health and safety program supported by a solid training and self-inspection programs are key to a successful safety culture.
Mr. Garcia is currently working with the USF Management team to develop a comprehensive report writing program that will allow a standardized format while significantly reducing office time.
Mr. Garcia earned his Professional Certificates in General Industry, Construction and Maritime from the University of South Florida OSHA Training Institute in 2011. He is an authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer for the Construction Industry, Maritime Industry and General Industry 10 hour and 30 hour classes; he is also the course chair for the USF OSHA Training Institute Education Center 7600 Disaster Worksite Worker course.
Mr. Garcia has been a speaker throughout Florida promoting the University of South Florida programs for all types of industries including those belonging to the American General Contractors Association, Mechanical Contractors Association South Florida, Plumbing Contractors Association of South Florida, attending the Workers Compensation Conference and companies working on residential and commercial construction projects.
