Birth Certificate Accuracy Pilot Project

Inaccurate or incomplete data in the birth certificate impacts surveillance, research, and public health prevention and intervention strategies.

The BCI Pilot aimed to improve the accuracy of 22 key birth certificate variables to at least 95% by providing training, support, and data reporting.

The Pilot phase ran from 2017-2018.

    This document provides detailed information on the 22 key variables including variable definitions, the location of the variables in the birth certificate, tips for entry, keywords and abbreviations, and the recommended source of information for each variable.

    Data Checklist
    The Data Checklist is a check sheet to record hospital monthly audits. It is available in a PDF format and in an Excel format as part of the data reporting spreadsheet.

    Data Reporting Spreadsheet
    The Data Reporting Spreadsheet is designed to also record the hospital’s monthly audits and allow for immediate visualization of audit results for early identification of challenging variables.
