Educational Training Facilities
Tampa General Hospital: This is the flagship hospital for the USF Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair. This 800+ bed Level I Trauma Center serves as the main tertiary care facility for West Central Florida. Less than five minutes from downtown Tampa, TGH receives neurosurgical patients from all parts of Florida and the greater southeast region. There are 32 dedicated, state of the art neurological ICU beds. The neurosurgical service typically runs 3-4 operating rooms daily on average. Over 1500 cases annually are performed by the department covering all aspects of neurosurgery. These include complex spine, cerebrovascular, skull base, neurosurgical oncology, functional neurosurgery, pediatric, and peripheral nerve operations, for example. The hospital has also expanded with new interventional radiology suites to accommodate our increasing endovascular neurosurgical volume. Further investments in intraoperative MRI are more examples of a continued commitment toward neurosurgical excellence.
As a sign of their commitment to the education of our residents, our training facilities have grown to remain up to date with the modern day medical and research state of the art resources. Our primary teaching facility, Tampa General Hospital, is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in West Central Florida providing emergency treatment to adults and children with critical injuries and acute illnesses. Tampa General Hospital provides a 24 hour trauma team ready to respond to the most serious of injuries. The hospital has 43 surgical suites, 19 main OR surgical suites, 4-6 dedicated neurosurgery OR’s, 1 dedicated trauma room and 1 dedicated pediatric neurosurgery OR. The Tampa General Hospital new state-of-the-art Emergency Trauma Center is equipped with 72 private rooms and was designed and built with disaster surge capacity in mind, as well as provisions for biological and/or epidemiologic and/or bioterrorism and/or other disaster events.
The Medical Trauma Resuscitation Area is composed of 6 bays, each with two headwalls to allow for 12 patients, if necessary. This area is strategically placed adjacent to our 64 slice CT scanner and full ED radiology suite within the ED (including MRI) with two new innovative Trauma and Neurosurgery operating rooms adjacent to the Trauma Center.
The state-of-the-art 32 bed Neuroscience ICU is adjacent to the 18 bed Trauma ICU which accommodates 50 Neuro-trauma ICU beds. These ICU rooms allow for bedside computers in each room, extensive monitoring capability (including capability for continuous EEG monitoring), and allow for family presence in a dedicated space within each room.

Moffitt Cancer Center: This is the only NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center in the state of Florid has been ranked the third busiest cancer center in America. Moffitt provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care for patients with primary and metastatic diseases of the CNS. Over 800 procedures are performed annually at this facility including skull base and complex spinal reconstruction for primary and metastatic disease in addition to CyberKnife treatments. The Moffitt Comprehensive Cancer Center expanded their research facilities to include 2 new multidisciplinary laboratories. One is dedicated to the research of stem cells and gliomas and the second laboratory is dedicated to research in spine biomechanics and anatomy. Both centers serve the neuro-oncology and neurology research studies in addition to their newly opened molecular biology laboratory.

James A. Haley Veterans Administration Hospital (JAH VA): The anchor hospital of VISN-8, JAH VA is a regional referral center for the VA system. This 400+ bed hospital is the busiest of only four polytrauma facilities in the United States, and it boasts national award-winning spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation centers.

All Childrens' Hospital (ACH): This nationally recognized facility is the only free standing children's hospital in West Central Florida. The pediatric neurosurgery group provides care for much of the pediatric population throughout the state of Florida. As a state approved pediatric trauma referral center All Children’s Hospital treats in excess of 600 traumatized children per year. All Children's Hospital opened a new state of the art facility in 2010 which houses the All Children's Neuroscience Institute which provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to pediatric patients with neurological disorders through the collaboration among the hospital's neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, and specialists in neuro-oncology, epilepsy and neuropathology. This new facility has more than a million square feet dedicated to 21st century care, combining the latest technology in a warm, family-centered setting which includes an enhanced continuity of care and follow-up, outpatient Care Center, where they provide a full array of diagnostic services and physician visits.
