GMS 6771 – Aging and Neuroscience (3 hrs)

This course is designed to present an overview of the aging central nervous system (CNS): normal structure and function, age-related changes, effects of traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases, and current and future CNS therapies. The course is mainly taught by faculty members of the Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair, Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair and affiliated faculty. The format of the course consists of lectures and discussions of assigned reading materials led by faculty members.

GMS 6772 – Human Structure and Function (Spinal Cord Development, Pathology and Therapy) (3 hrs)

This course is designed to present an overview of the spinal cord: anatomy, normal development, physiology, pathology of the spinal cord, and current and future treatments for injuries and diseases affecting the spinal cord. The course is mainly taught by faculty members of the Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair, Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair and other faculty from the Morsani College of Medicine. The format of the course consists of lectures and interactive sessions led by faculty members.

GMS 6908 – Medical Science Independent Study (1-3 hrs)

Develop, in conjunction with a faculty advisor, an individual project with the goal of completing an in-depth study of a topic directly relevant to the student’s program of study in the medical sciences.

GMS 6708 – Neuroimmunology (3 hrs)

Designed to provide an in-depth review of topics related to immunology in the nervous system.

GMS 7930 – Stem Cells in Brain Repair (3 hrs)

The goal is this course is to familiarize the students with some of the basic issues in stem cell research today, specifically as they relate to the treatment of brain injuries and disease. The format for the course is a combination of lecture and discussion of current and seminal articles in the field. Each student will be expected to have read the material in advance and be able to discuss it in class.
