Externships & Clinical Training

USF Externship Feedback

Restrictions: A maximum of (3) periods may be spent off campus in externships.

Externships are NOT normally scheduled during the following periods without signed approval from the Associate Dean for Students Affairs and the Registrar's Office.

  • Period 10: Match Day
  • Period 11: Graduation

Requirements for Approval: To receive approval for an externship course, the student must first receive concurrence from their faculty advisor. The following forms must be completed for the externship to be approved:

  1. Externship Application
    These forms are available from the Registrar's Office or they can be found on the Forms page. The student must complete all requested information in Part I (which includes the signature of the sponsoring USF Department Chairperson) and submit the form to the Registrar's Office for approval.
  2. Host Institution Application Form
    Most Medical School will require completion of their application form or an application via VSAS.
  3. Proof of Emergency Medical Insurance
    Students participating in international externships must provide the Registrar's Office with proof of emergency medical insurance.

Students away from campus on externships are required to keep the Registrar's Office informed of their exact whereabouts so they can be located in the event of an emergency.

Non University Externships: This type of program should be arranged between the USF Departmental Chairperson and the Chef of the hospital service (who in turn is responsible for obtaining any further approval required by the hospital governing body). The USF College of Medicine Application for Externship Course must be completed.

Under unique circumstances tutorial experience with clinicians in practice may be arranged through the Departmental Chairperson and the Dean of the College of Medicine.

Reporting of Grades: All externships require a written evaluation of the student's performance at the conclusion of such elective periods. This evaluation must be submitted to the Registrar's Office for processing. Students should take an evaluation form with them to the externship. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the Registrar's Office receives an evaluation form from the host institution.

Interview Period

The vast majority of interviews occur during December and January, senior periods seven and eight. USF students away from campus during interview periods are required to keep the Registrar's Office informed. It is especially important to provide a contact number in the event of an emergency.

Attendance Requirements in Clinical Training Years

Attendance requirements in the clinical training years are determined for individual courses by the respective department. Students are expected to carry out all required clinical responsibilities during these years of training. Recognizing that situations arise which require students to miss time from their clinical responsibilities, the following procedures will be followed to obtain approval to be absent. Students who must be absent are expected to acquire the same degree of clinical competence as other students involved in the course.

  1. Emergencies - illness, family illness, etc.

    Students will phone the individual faculty member or resident responsible for the course, to report their absenteeism on the first day of being absent and should indicate the nature of the emergency.

  2. Scheduled Time Off- out of town meetings, personal requests, etc.

    Students will submit a written request to the course director for permission to miss scheduled training time. The request should be submitted as far in advance as possible to the scheduled event. The decision to grant or deny the request will be at the discretion of the course director. Due consideration will be given for activities such as selected student representation to various organizations, personal requests, and residency interview. The course director will respond to the student's request in writing with a copy to the Office of Student Affairs.
