Tampa General Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center located next to downtown Tampa on Davis Island. TGH has over 800 beds, and our ED sees > 70k a year. Our admission rate is roughly 25%. Visit the TGH website for more details on the hospital itself.

The CEO of Tampa General Hospital approached our group of experienced clinicians in August, 2001 to request that we create a residency program in Emergency Medicine. This proposal was warmly welcomed by our attending physicians, our parent group (TeamHealth), and the University of South Florida. Drawing upon his prior experience as a residency director, Dr. O'Keefe was able to rapidly create an excellent program, complete the PIF, and submit the application to the Residency Review Committee by November of 2001. The program received approval on the first submission, September 16, 2002. Our first residents started in July, 2003 and we graduated the first class in June of 2006.

Our program received full accreditation with our next site survey, and we remain a very stable program, attracting more than 100 applicants per available training position each year. We expanded to 8 residents per year with our incoming class in 2007, and plan to apply for further expansion to 10 residents annually. We are excited about the opening of our brand-new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department in November of 2007, which we anticipate will further increase our clinical volume while maintaining a very high acuity level. Our program is designed to foster both clinical and academic excellence, and takes full advantage of all that the patient population at Tampa General Hospital has to offer.

Further strengths of our program include superior medical simulation opportunities, a rigorous exposure to training in emergency ultrasound, development of leadership skills, and a focus on the development of administrative skills with full attention to the business aspects of emergency medicine. The University of South Florida Emergency Medicine Residency has been designed to give each resident physician all of the skills that they will need to successfully practice our specialty in any setting that they choose.

We have our Grand Rounds Wednesday mornings 7 AM to noon every week. Generally our lectures are "protected," however, on one or two rotations it is not always possible to attend all of Grand Rounds, due to patient care issues (MICU). We have guest lecturers, EM attendings, specialists, and current residents give our lectures, as well as interactive "mock oral boards" and other fun ways to learn Emergency Medicine.

We are given a new Tintinalli's upon entering the program.

ACEP as third year, if you publish at any conference you are sponsored to go as well. Keep in mind that since we are in Florida, there are many smaller conferences that are scheduled here due to our great weather and beaches. Rotation schedule permitting, you may attend these "local" conferences as well.

Applications are accepted beginning in August for the following year's class. The deadline for completed applications is December 1st. Our program is accepting only electronic applications through ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service. The required documents for an application include the completed ERAS application, Dean's letter, atleast three Letters of Recommendation, transcript, and USMLE/COMLEX scores.

No, we do not have a "minimum" USMLE/COMLEX score requirement.

We ask that no more than 2 attempts be made.

Yes, we do accept FMG and IMG's and currently have both in our program.

The University of South Florida will accept the J-1 Visa.

No, US clinical experience is not required but it is preferred.

We require (3) Letters of Reference, and ask that at least one be from an Emergency Medicine rotation.

We have 10 PGY-1 positions available.

Currently we have 28 residents total. (8) PGY-3, (10) PGY-2 and (10) PGY-1.

We typically invite 120 applicants to interview for the PGY-1 positions.

No, we do not have a cut off date of graduation.

Yes, we do participate in ERAS and therefore will only accept applications via ERAS.

Our deadline for applications is December 1st.

We are currently not set up to have residents do a "rotation" with us; however, we can have you come by to "shadow" one of our current residents. Spend a few hours or the whole day.
