Date: Thursday, June 6, 4:00-6:00PM

Place: Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS)

Objectives:

  • Define practical methods of instruction for experiential learning in the clinical setting
  • Recognize and promote the development of a learning community amongst peers

Course Description:  Time constraints and lack of formal training in teaching methodologies makes it difficult for clinical educators to effectively teach across multiple environments. Group interactions and discussion are key ingredients in developing a supportive learning environment. This activity will present adult learning theories and evidence–based practices to be applied in the clinical learning environment.

Objectives:

  • Discuss what bedside teaching means and identify opportunities for teaching EBM at the Bedside.
  • Apply EBM tools to learner education opportunities.
  • Commit to implementing EMB tools and recourses at the bedside in your clinical setting.

Course Description: Evidence based medicine (EBM) is defined as the explicit, conscientious and reasonable use of modern best evidence in making decision about the care of the individual patient. In conjunction of clinical decision making, EBM training is critical for bedside teaching for physicians. This course will provide the essentials on basic principles of teaching/ implementing EBM tools and resources in various clinical settings.

Date: Thursday, November 21, 4:00-6:00PM

Place: CAMLS-Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation

Objectives:

  • Discuss reasons for and barriers to facilitating an optimal feedback encounter
  • Outline the SPIKE model for use in facilitating an optimal feedback encounter
  • Role-play facilitate an optimal feedback encounter using the SPIKES model
  • Develop a plan to implement a faculty development session on how to facilitate an optimal feedback encounter

Course Description: In the era of competency based medical education, the goal for our learners is to achieve entrustment of skills during their training. As educators, our role is to facilitate the learning experience by providing frequent and effective feedback. Although not the general intent, providing feedback can sometimes be viewed as delivering “bad news” to our learners. In this session, we use the SPIKES protocol as a framework to deliver feedback in much the same way as delivering bad news.

Objectives:

  • Distinguish between feedback and assessment
  • Identify barriers to providing a meaningful assessment
  • Practice using an assessment rubric
  • Craft useful narrative assessment comments

Course Description: There are ongoing concerns by educators over the inability of professionals to accurately evaluate their learners clinical competency. Providing feedback and assessment carry two separate meanings and should be treated differently. Assessment drives learning, and meaningful assessment in a practical setting can have a fundamental impact in the learning environment. In this session, we use best practices utilizing assessment rubrics and the BOSS-Method as a framework for transmitting feedback to learners.

Objectives:

  • List key tools in the search process
  • Identify types of reviews, studies, and research designs
  • Differentiate methods to evaluate medical literature
  • Describe the utility of creating a good clinical question

Course Description: Physicians are overloaded with patients, but they should not have to be overloaded with research resources. The medical librarian provides education about how to find relevant research resources utilizing medical library methods and tools, looking at various study types and research design. Medical literature needs to be timely and accurate and physicians will learn efficient, effective methods for evaluating the literature. The medical librarian utilizes the 5 A's (Assess, Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply) and the development of a good clinical question to support research in evidence-based medicine practices.
