Medical DirectorRoger Sherman, MD
Dr. Sherman is the Medical Director of the USF Health in the Villages Specialty Care Center. He brings to our facility years of experience and knowledge in medicine and the community’s needs. This includes over 45 years in a surgical practice as a Board certified thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon. Dr. Sherman is the founder of several open heart programs in Miami and has been instrumental in many surgical programs here in The Villages.
Dr. Sherman is a former Air Force Flight Surgeon and is currently a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner who provides aviation flight physicals to pilots. He has extensive experience working with special issuance authorizations to pilots with limiting medical conditions. He enjoys the ability to continue seeing patients and meet fellow aviators.
His education includes such revered institutions as the Citadel, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Miami School of Medicine.
Dr. Sherman left his surgical practice in 2012 and dedicates his time to The Villages Health program and the USF Health Specialty Care Center. He looks forward to helping make this America’s Healthiest Hometown and providing expert care to all patients.
Kathleen A. Steepy, MD, FACOG
Dr. Steepy is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has been board certified since 1996, and is a certified clinical bone densitomotrist. She attended Carnegie-Mellon University for her undergraduate education and received her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. She completed a four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wright State University. As an Air Force Physician, she practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio and Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. She was in an OB-GYN private practice in Bel Air, Maryland, for five years prior to coming to the Villages in 2002. She is married with 2 children.

Caroline Mathis, MSN, ARNP-BC
Caroline is board certified in Women’s Health through the NCC. She attended Shenandoah University and graduated with her ADN, and BSN. She received her MSN from the University of Cincinnati as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in Women’s Health. She has worked in both public and private healthcare settings in Jacksonville, FL at the Mayo Clinic and Baptist Health Care Systems for ten years. Prior to coming to The Villages, she worked in Knoxville, Tennessee as a solo Nurse Practitioner in private practice for two years.
Rosemary has been nationally certified in obstetrics and gynecology by NCC since 1991 and has completed an RN First Assist course in advanced perioperative nursing. She received her ADN from Daytona Beach Community College and her Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner certificate from the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program in Dallas. Rosemary has worked for a private OB-GYN practice and has more than 15 years experience working in public health. She is a native of Leesburg and has 2 daughters.
Thoracic and Vascular Surgery
Adrian Finol-Hernandez, MD
Dr. Finol is board certified in Thoracic Surgery. He graduated from Universidad Central De Venezuela as a Doctor of Medicine. He completed his residency in surgery from Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Finol completed his residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery from Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA. He has spent the last 5 years in private practice in The Villages as a General Thoracic and Vascular Surgeon.

Dr. Panos is joining the USF Health team from Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle Physician Group in Illinois. He has most recently been Director, Surgical Quality and part of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. Dr. Panos received his undergraduate degree from University of California, Berkeley and a graduate degree in Business Management from American Technological University. He received his medical degree from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Panos did his General Surgery residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center and his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from Walther Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He has been a Course Director and Instructor for a variety of surgery courses, is a Fellow with American College of Surgeons, and has been involved in numerous publications and presentations.

Dr. Ethier specializes in orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine and joint replacement. He treats the full spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions affecting the hips, knees, shoulders, ankles, elbows and wrists. Dr Ethier provides advanced care for sports injuries of all ages, fracture care and pain due to arthritis, bursitis, sprains and strains. He utilizes the latest advances in surgical technique and computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery.
Dr Ethier is distinguished as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Associate Professor USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and a member of the Florida Orthopaedic Society, Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, Society of USAF Flight Surgeons and USUHS Department of Surgery. He is currently President of the Medical Staff at Munroe Regional Medical Center and Chief of Orthopedic Surgery for USF Health Specialty Care Center. His research is published in peer-reviewed medical journals. Dr Ethier has received numerous awards and recognitions for his service in the military and in medicine.
Dr. Mersey spent 32 years in private practice and as chief of endocrinology at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, as well as director of the Diabetes Center.
He has been actively involved in clinical research throughout his career in the areas of diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders and osteoporosis. In addition, he retains faculty appointments at University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins. Dr. Mersey is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology.
Dr. Mersey specializes in diabetes management, thyroid disease, hypertension, lipid disorders, osteoporosis and other endocrine disorders.
Farhaad C. Golkar, MD, FACS
Dr. Golkar is a Florida native, born and raised in Miami, FL. He is board certified in General Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He completed a fellowship in Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgery at Tampa General Hospital. His interests include the surgical treatment of pancreatic, biliary, and hepatic (liver) malignancies. In addition to gastrointestinal surgical oncology, he specializes in minimally invasive hernia surgery and antireflux/hiatal hernia surgery. Prior to coming to The Villages, he was in private practice in Citrus County, FL, and also practiced as a trauma surgeon in Tampa and Pensacola, FL.

Do I need a referral to see a USF Health specialty physician?
