Education Requirement


Education in human subjects protection is required for all faculty, staff, and students. Educational requirements include the completion of the foundation requirement and annual continuing education in subsequent calendar years.  This education must be completed and documented before research is started and before enrolling in the following courses: special project, directed research, thesis and dissertation
.


Registration Holds!

A registration hold will be placed on students who have not complied with this requirement.  If you receive a registration hold, complete the requirements below and allow for 48 business hours for your paperwork to be processed.  Students should contact COPH Academic and Student Affairs Office at 974-6505 to request that the hold be removed after 48 business hours.  Please Note: You will not be able to register for any courses until this requirement has been met.  Students should complete this requirement well in advance in order to register before classes fill up.

Steps to Complete Education Requirement for Human Subjects Protection

In order to register for the above listed courses, students must do the following:

  1. Go to: USF’s Mandatory Investigator Education for Human Subject Protections webpage, scroll to Foundation Requirement, 1. Required Readings, complete all readings listed.
  2. Go to: USF’s Courses in Human Subject Protections webpage, scroll to Foundation and then choose to complete one of the following courses.
    • NIH NCI - Human Participant Protections Education for Research Teams (To begin, either log in as a returning user or click on the new user registration link on the left. Remember to print out certificate of completion when finished.)
    • CITI Basic Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects (Register for the CITI Course. A certificate of completion will be emailed directly to the student)
    • Other courses are listed as an option, but COPH recommends one of the two courses listed above.
  1. Download and print the Investigators Responsibility Certification form. Read the form completely and sign it.

Document Submission Process

Once the above steps are completed, the following original documents should be submitted to Priscilla Snyder (813-974-1174), Office of Research, COPH, Rm. 1150 or via fax at
813-974-0959:

  • Certificate of Completion (NIH or CITI Foundation course)
  • Signed Investigators Responsibility Certification form
  • Current Resume (for students) and CV (for Faculty and Staff)


If you have faxed in your documents, you must mail the originals to Priscilla Snyder, Office of Research at 13201 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. MDC 56 Tampa, FL 33612.

Annual Continuing Education Requirement

Education must be completed each year by investigators and key personnel involved in all studies except exempted studies. Completion of the foundation course meets the requirement for the first year. Beginning in 2004, the renewal period is based upon the calendar year. The CE requirement may be met by taking any IRB-approved CE course at any time during the renewal period, which now ends December 31st of each year. The same process of submitting the documents should be followed for meeting the CE requirement. For a list of CE courses, click here.

IRB Applications

IRB Approval is required for faculty before a grant account may be set up.
IRB approval is also
required for students conducting research projects. IRB Research Compliance will inform you whether you need IRB approval.
