MPH Tropical Public Health and Infectious Diseases, USF College of Public Health, 2000

Mr. Matthew Rollie received his MPH from the USF College of Public Health (COPH) in Tropical Public Health and Infectious Diseases in 2000.  In 2000 he co-founded the USF Center for Biological Defense (CBD), initially serving as education and training coordinator for first responders across Florida.  During the October 2001 anthrax disruptions, Mr. Rollie was completing bioweapons and biological casualties training at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Disease at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.  Upon returning to the USF CBD, he and colleagues were inundated with numerous calls and testing requests for "white powders,"  which led to the development of a threat assessment and sample collection training course for emergency responders.  Thousands of officials have been trained by this course which is still in use today. During his 7 year tenure with the USF CBD, Mr. Rollie managed over $50 million in federal biodefense research and training contracts at USF and across the Florida State University System.  He served on several domestic security committees in the Tampa Bay region, and in 2007 Mr. Rollie joined the Department of Global Health where he currently serves as the Administrator.

As the Administrator for the Department, Mr. Rollie assists with managing the day to day operations of the largest department in the College of Public Health.  He develops and implements budget strategies for the Department and oversees all student related activities within the department.  He is a founding member of the Global Health Infectious Disease Research (GHIDR) Program, which included the initial design and build out of over 15,000 square feet of BSL-2, BSL-3, insectary and vivarium facilities.  Current GHIDR development activities include the design and construction of a computational biology lab and 8,000 square feet of GHIDR training labs, which will provide COPH students with the skills and tools needed to tackle global health and emerging infectious disease challenges.

In addition to Mr. Rollie’s administrative duties with the Department of Global Health, he is actively involved in sexually transmitted infection (STI) research.  In 1999 while completing his studies at the USF COPH, he was awarded an internship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of STD Prevention.  This internship focused on the evaluation of policies related to screening for sexually transmitted infections in prisons, jails and juvenile detention centers.  The internship resulted in a proposal to develop an STI screening project of high risk youth entering the Hillsborough County Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC).  This project was funded by the National Institutes of Health in 2005, and this resulted in the first ever STI screening project at a juvenile assessment center.  The results from this study are currently in press, and STI screening at the Hillsborough County JAC is now a routine service.  In addition to many volunteer activities across the Tampa Bay region, he serves on the Board of Directors for Tampa Crossroads.
