Other Information: Dr. Cannons is the Scientific Director of the Center for Biological Defense (CBD) in the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida (USF). He coordinates the applied laboratory research at the CBD which includes: developing rapid detection and molecular typing methods for identification and surveillance of agents of bioterrorism and emerging infections; establishing procedures to determine antimicrobial resistance of bioterrorism agents; validating field detection kits; and evaluating decontamination procedures. Dr Cannons is a member of the Tampa Bay BAC and Tampa Bay BioWatch surge team.

Dr. Cannons has established strong working relationships with the Florida Department of Health , Regional Domestic Security Task Force, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, FBI, Department of Defense and the CDC. Dr. Cannons interacts with these various groups on many aspects including emergency response field exercises, establishing protocols for use in the field, developing laboratory surge capacity procedures, and training.
