Executive Master of Public Health - Public Health PracticeThe Executive Weekend MPH program is a unique and customized program to serve the needs of the busy public health practitioner. Past and current students have represented many health care fields and specialties including physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, and many more. This diversity provides students with the opportunity to meet and collaborate with colleagues from other specialties and geographic areas while enhancing the students’ ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
Core and required courses in this format are intensive, in-depth, and offered one weekend a month on the Tampa campus for 16 consecutive months. Small class sizes guarantee students individual attention and rich face-to-face interactions with experienced peers and faculty. Electives are available online to complement the students’ individual interests.
The Master of Public Health with a concentration in Public Health Practice (PHP) is a fully accredited program that provides an opportunity to develop public health practice leadership skills, learn advanced tools to help protect and improve the health of the greater community and expand your knowledge of modern health care organizations.
Academic public health practice is a field of scholarship that seeks to bring together the pragmatic needs of the practitioner and the production of scholarly inquiry to contribute to the welfare of populations. Our program at the University of South Florida, College of Public Health meets the particular needs of working public health professionals with an emphasis on the promotion of scholarship in public health practice.
Program OutlineOur curriculum provides the tools to work within the areas of surveillance, evaluation, education, and clinical care of national, state, and local populations.
Although similar to traditional MPH programs, the Public Health Practice curriculum not only incorporates core competencies, we tailor our courses to the unique needs of health care practitioners. The diversity of participants, background and expertise adds a unique dimension to the program and encourages the development of strong teams, study groups, discussion groups, and friendships in a challenging intellectual environment.
Final graduation requirements include completion of a supervised field experience, a written special project, and a comprehensive examination. A faculty advisor will assist each student in the planning and completion of a project that demonstrates research skill and integrates core competencies in an area of the student’s personal and professional interests.
The Field Experience may be completed at a location of your choice or through a planned group experience with other students, staff and faculty. Students from prior groups have traveled to such sites as Hawaii, Costa Rica, Cuba, Panama, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During the final 5-day, on-campus requirement, students will complete the PHP Seminar, a culminating experience integrating topics and skills introduced in prior classes along with the development and enhancement of tools needed to be a leader in tomorrow’s public health care system. Students will also take the College-wide Comprehensive exam at this time.
OpportunitiesThis unique learning opportunity is designed to provide a vehicle for those working in the public health and the healthcare arenas to meet the academic, research, and training needs of the public health community and to earn the Masters in Public Health degree (MPH).
