Biostatistics Program
USF Health

Biostatistics involves the development and application of statistical, computational, and mathematical techniques to scientific research in health-related fields, including medicine, public health, environmental sciences, mental health, agricultural research and biological sciences. The field has an indispensable role in improving health and reducing illness.

Biostatistical scientists play essential roles in health-related research and practice, ranging from formulating scientific questions, designing studies including determining the sampling techniques, sample sizes, and randomization schemes, coordinating data collection procedures, analyzing data, to interpreting, reporting, and presenting statistical findings.

Research  is at the core of Biostatistics graduate training. Our faculty actively conduct cutting-edge methodology research with applications in fields as diverse as:

· Prevention of mental disorders, drug abuse, and suicide among  school-aged youth

· Modeling biological systems such as HIV/AIDS via pharmacokenetics and pharmacodynamics

· Longitudinal data analysis and multilevel models as applied to aging & Alzheimer’s Disease, community-based intervention, social behavior, and outcome evaluations

· Bioterrorism and public preparedness

· Environmental health research and regulatory policies

Job Prospects  for Biostatistics graduates are excellent. The demand for well-trained Biostatistical scientists continues to grow as do salaries. Graduates from our Biostatistics programs have found positions in:

  • Pharmaceutical research with companies such as: Pfizer;Eli Lilly;Johnson&Johnson
  • University research at: Harvard University; Johns Hopkins University;University of South Florida; University of Michigan
  • Federal and state governments: CDC; State Health Departments; Canada D.O.H.
  • Hospital/Research Centers: H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Ctr. & Research Institute; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital; James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital; University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
  • Other research related institutes: Clinical trial research; Nielsen media research

Biostatistics Program concentrations: Graduate Degree programs in Biostatistics provide training in Biostatistical methods, data analysis and interpretation of results from health related studies.

  • Masters of Public Health (MPH) with  concentrations in  Biostatistics or a dual concentration in Biostatistics and Epidemiology  emphasizes A Special Project and a Practical Field Experience.  In addition to the program specific courses, all students in the MPH program take: Epidemiology, Biostatistical Inference I, Environmental and Occupational Health, Health Policy and Management and Social and Behavioral Health as core Public Health courses.
  • Masters of Science in Public Health (MSPH) with a concentration in  Biostatistics culminates with  the development and presentation of a thesis.  In addition to their program specific courses, all students in the MSPH program take: Epidemiology, Biostatistical Inference I and one additional Public Health core course.
  • PhD with concentration in Biostatistics involves rigorous and extensive training in quantitative, analytical,  computation, and scientific research skills. The program aims to prepare the students interested in becoming research scientists, who not only are experts in Biostatistical methods, but also are capable of conducting scientific research in collaboration with scientists in different health related fields. The program culminates in a dissertation.
  • Certificate in Biostatistics requires a total of 15 credit hours, and trains students from various educational  backgrounds to understand Biostatistical methods and enables them to effectively analyze medical and health-related data. To enroll, the student must have a bachelors degree and the required quantitative background.
