Lawton and Rhea Chiles Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies

This page is dedicated to the loving memory of Greg Alexander, Distinguished Researcher and Teacher. Although his time at USF was far too brief, we benefited from his passion and lifelong work in the advancement of our mission.

SEPTEMBER 20, 1950 – FEBRUARY 20, 2007
(Washington, DC)                                      (Tampa, FL)

Greg R. Alexander embraced those who could least advocate for themselves: unborn children.  He helped to define the entire field of perinatal epidemiology in public health and medicine – the clinical science behind ensuring health births and healthy babies.  Notably, he developed fetal growth curves for national use to measure and prevent health disparities at childbirth.

He was an internationally distinguished researcher and teacher, Editor of the Journal of Maternal and Child Health, and Professor of Public Health and Pediatrics, most recently at the University of South Florida, and previously at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, at the University of Minnesota, the University of Hawaii and John Hopkins University.  Trained at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, Dr. Alexander was early struck by the often squalid conditions in which poor children lived.  He became a sanitarian, obtained a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina, and then a doctorate at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health all the while working in the field, engaged in public health practice.

Through hundreds of major articles, book chapters and technical reports, Dr. Alexander has helped to identify and characterize racial and socio-economic disparities that have become empirically correlated with poor pregnancy outcomes and adverse, post-birth health problems.  He believed that healthy children are our culture’s most valuable asset, toward which substantial investments should be made.  He also sought to convince national and state policy makers that more resources needed to be dedicated to both the early care of pregnant women and the training of health professionals who provide that care.

At 56 years old, the cause of death was heart failure, associated with radiation treatment of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma thirty years early.  He is survived by his wife, Dr. Donna Petersen, Dean of the College of Public Health, University of South Florida, daughters Kerry and Morgan, sister Marva Paige and mother Mary Williamson Alexander of Chesapeake, Virginia.  He had a penchant for obscure mustards and curious varieties of sausage.  He was a fabulous cook with several published recipes.
