Curriculum Vitae

Carla Vandeweerd is Associate Director of the James and Jennifer Harrell Center and Assistant Professor in the Department of Community and Family Health, College of Public Health, at the University of South Florida. Her research interests focus on aging, dementia and elder mistreatment with the perspective that abuse and neglect dramatically affect health and quality of life in old age, particularly in those with dementia or with other physical or cognitive limitations. Dr. Vandeweerd has been part of several NIH funded research projects that have examined factors associated with neglect in community residing older adults, as well as risk factors for physical and verbal mistreatment of older adults with Alzheimer's disease across the state of Florida. In addition to these federally funded projects, Dr. Vandeweerd has been involved in program evaluation of the Hillsborough County Elder Justice Center supported by the Retirement Research Foundation, and in evaluation of the Hillsborough County Offender Treatment Programs designed to reduce domestic violence recidivism. Dr. Vandeweerd serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect, and served as an expert reviewer for the National Academy of Science Panel on Risk and Prevalence of Elder Abuse and Neglect.

In addition to pursuing research and teaching, Dr. Vandeweerd is also involved in community service at local, national, and international levels. Among other commitments, Dr. Vandeweerd serves locally on the community partner board of the Hillsborough County Family Justice Center, and serves nationally on the Gerontological Society of America's Task Force on Women. She has also traveled to the Dominican Republic for the Florida Association for Volunteer Action in the Caribbean and the Americas to assist local service providers and government leaders in the development of domestic violence and women's health services.

Dr. Vandeweerd has strong methodological expertise and is involved in teaching research methods in the department. In addition, she teaches courses on social determinants of health and grant writing, and lectures to students, community groups, practitioners, and policy makers on issues of elder mistreatment.
