Over the past few years, several students secured nationally competitive field placements and post-graduate internships/fellowships. Some of these students forfeited convenience and financial resources to incorporate a learning experience into their plan of study that took them away from the Tampa Bay area. As a reward for their efforts, the students were exposed to public health leadership, policy development and advocacy from a national and (sometimes) international perspective. July 2011—Montray Smith (PHP) was accepted into a one-month, summer placement with the South Texas Environmental Education and Research (STEER) Program. She will study environmental medicine/border health in Harlingen and Laredo, TX. June 2011—Jennifer Peregoy MPH, CPH (EPI/GHP) was fortunate to secure two fellowships: (1) CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship (with the Washington, DC Department of Health) and (2) CDC Associate Service Fellowship with the National Center for Health Statistics in Hyattsville, MD. She chose to accept the placement with the National Center for Health Statistics, working within the Division of Health Interview Statistics as an analyst in the Data Analysis and Quality Assurance Branch. A PhD is still in her future, but she is presently interested in gaining applied skills in data analysis and data management techniques. Peregoy begins her new post on June 20. Prior to her fellowship, she worked with The Arthritis Institute of America. June 2011—Damian Stanziano (PHP) is one of ten students selected for the 2011 Florida Alliance Scholars Program. The program is sponsored by the Florida Alliance for Health Professions Diversity (FAHPD), a new organization which has as its mission to increase the diversity of health professionals and researchers, reduce racial and ethnic health disparities, and promote access to quality health care for Floridians. As a Florida Alliance Scholar, Dr. Stanziano will receive $1000 for research expenses. June 2011—Kate M. Roders (GH) secured a summer internship with the Global Health Fellows Program in Washington, DC. She is assigned to the Strategic Planning, Evaluation and Reporting (SPER) Division in the Bureau for Global Health's Office of HIV/AIDS. The office of HIV/AIDS is the focus of HIV/AIDS technical leadership for USAID and has primary responsibility for leading the Agency's efforts within President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Ms Roders will serve as the Monitoring and Evaluation intern and she will support projects with the SPER Division and will be focusing on learning more of The Office of HIV/AIDS initiatives on in-country capacity building projects. May 2011—Jesse Dang (MHA) received an internship with The Institute for Diversity in Health Management's Summer Enrichment Program. He is assigned to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Florida for 11 weeks. May 2011—Rachel Kirkpatrick, CPH, received a summer internship with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She is assigned to the Division of Mental Hygiene/Bureau of Mental Health where she will work primarily with the Data and Special Projects Coordinator of the Bureau of Mental Health assisting in analysis activities for several projects around quality improvement, indicator development, data analysis and presentation for the Medicaid funded Assertive Community Treatment Programs and Mental Health Case Management Programs. Rachel is studying Maternal and Child Health in the COPH. February 2011-- The USF COPH partners with the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and the CDC Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) to offer a three-month, paid fellowship for a public health student. Two CFH students were selected as fellows for this summer. Ms Sara Kennedy will work with the Epidemiology Branch's evaluation team. Specifically, she will assist the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Promotion (NCCDPHP) with program evaluation, scientific and technical assistance in support of tobacco control research and surveillance and evaluation of the National Tobacco Control Program, nationally and at the State and local level, and in support of other OSH publications and programs. Methods to be utilized include program evaluation research design, qualitative and qualitative evaluation methods and report preparation. Ms Tamara Looney is assigned to the Health Communications Branch. Her activities will include program evaluation, scientific and technical assistance in support of evaluation of CDC's Media Campaign Resource Center and in support of other OSH publications and programs. Methods to be utilized include program evaluation research design, quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods and report preparation. December 2010—Quyen Tran (HPM) was selected to intern with the US Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women's Health. Over the course of her semester placement, Quyen will work on an education campaign, learn the grant process, participate in program planning and evaluations, embark on community outreach and facilitate HIV programs on prevention. She is based in Washington, DC. May 2010—Rosanna Garcia (GH) was selected as a Federal Career Intern for the summer. She will work with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at HRSA in Maryland. May 2010—LaToya Thomas (Toxicology/Risk Assessment) secured summer employment with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development, National Risk Management Research Laboratory. She worked on the Continuous Monitoring of Near-Road Ultrafine Particles in Las Vegas, NV Project. Additionally, she researched the potential adverse health effects experienced through inhalation exposure to ultrafine particles. LaToya’s employment was based in Research Triangle Park, NC. April 2010—Victoria Floresca (PHP) was accepted in to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Health Research Training Program. She will work in the Bureau of TB Control and Surveillance and begins her placement this summer. April 2010—Ankita Datta (MHA) was selected to participate in the Summer Enrichment Program offered by the Institute for Diversity in Health Management. She will work with system redesign and health informatics departments on various management level projects. The internship is based at the Northern Arizona VA Medical Center in Prescott, AZ. April 2010—Jennifer M. Shackett (MCH) was offered two summer placements with the Graduate Student Internship Program in Kentucky and Washington. The program is sponsored by Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau. April 2010—Seth Holloway (MHA) was selected as a visiting scholar for The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This summer, Seth will work with the Health Communication/eHealth Team on a project aimed at improving health literacy by developing a system to measure and evaluate pre and post visit BMI, personal goal attainment and use of the healthfinder.gov website. April 2010--Sandra Delgado (GH) was accepted into two international programs for the summer. The first program was sponsored by the One World Foundation. She was selected for the Young Leaders Program for the Senegal 2010 team and received a scholarship from the Global Health Fellows Program which covered all the program expenses. The second opportunity was with the Mt. Sinai International Exchange Program for Minority Students. Sandra will work under the supervision of Dr. Marcia Galvan from the National Institute of Public Health in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The program covers all of her expenses for three months (travel, orientation, accommodations) and provides a monthly stipend of $1,000. She will pursue the Mt. Sinai International Exchange Program for Minority Students because it relates more to her area of interest, which is working in Latin America. Currently, Sandra is a graduate assistant in the Department of Global Health. December 2009--The USF COPH MPH Fellowship was awarded to two students for spring 2010. Ms. Christine Schlip (CFH) is assigned to the Research & Surveillance Team. Ms. Crystal Bruce (PHP) will examine State Tobacco Advertising Legislative Activities Towards Menthol Cigarettes with the Research Development Team. The fellowship is based in the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health in Atlanta. September 2009—Max Moreno, PhD (EOH) received a postdoctoral fellowship with the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. He will work with the Global Hydrology and Climate Center in Huntsville, AL. The fellowship is one of many training opportunities organized by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities. September 2009—Rosanna Garcia (GH) secured two placements via the Hispanic National Internship Program. Her summer opportunity was based with the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration’s HIV/AIDS Bureau in Rockville, Maryland. This fall she is assigned to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration where she will work with substance abuse and HIV. Both internships provide housing, airfare and compensation graduate students. September 2009—Anna Lea Burchfield (HPM) is one of three people selected as a Public Health Preparedness Fellow. The program is sponsored by the Association of Schools of Public Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). Anna will spend one year with the Ohio Department of Health’s Office of Health Preparedness in Columbus, Ohio.May 2009—Johnathan Hollingshed (GH Practice) was accepted into the One World Young Leaders Program. This summer he will spend eight weeks working on a human rights/development project in a developing country. Additionally, Johnathan received a Global Health Fellows Program scholarship to fund his international travel and attendance at the Global Health Council Conference in Washington, DC. Johnathan graduated in May and leaves for Uganda at the end of the month. May 2009—Shabnam Mehra MSPH was selected for a 2009 National Network for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS) Fellowship. Her placement is with the EPA Headquarters in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. She begins her fellowship in July and will work on Researching Innovative Air Quality Benefits Estimation Methods http://www.epa.gov/enviroed/NNEMS/2009101.html. Shabnam is a PhD student in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. May 2009—Kendyll G. Myles (PH Admin) will participate in the Summer Enrichment Program offered by the Institute for Diversity in Health Management. She will be a Systems Redesign Coordinator Intern at the Northern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System and begins her training on June 1. April 2009—Diana Santos Lima (Socio-Health) earned a Health Communications Internship with the Office of Science Planning and Assessment at the National Cancer Institutes. She begins in July. April 2009—Marissa Zwald (Health Education) received the ASPH/CDC fellowship with the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity. She graduated this spring and begins her two-year fellowship on July 20 in Atlanta. November 2008—Bambi Arnold (EPI) is the second USF COPH student selected to serve as an ORISE Fellow in the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH). Her placement is with the evaluation team and she begins her rotation in January. May 2008—Shruti Mulki (EOH) is headed to Atlanta for the summer. She was hired as a Life Scientist (summer intern) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund Division. May 2008—Monica Gray (EOH, PhD student in Engineering) was selected for the Summer Administrative Training Program with the Los Angeles County Public Health Department. Monica’s paid placement is with the Alcohol and Drug Program Administration’s Program Analysis & Coordination Unit. May 2008—This summer Ana Amaya (GH) will intern with the United Nations in New York City. She will conduct research on global health initiatives (TB, malaria, etc.) and their effectiveness in relation to the Millennium Development Goals. April 2008—Goushanee Ramkeerat (CFH) received a summer internship through the Health Research Training Program at the NY Dept. of Mental Health and Hygiene. April 2008—Lauren Whiteman (HPM) was awarded a summer internship with the Hispanic Serving Health Professional Schools. She will work on a cancer control and prevention program based at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan. April 2008—Nadia Deeb (GH) was accepted into a two-month, summer placement with the South Texas Environmental Education and Research (STEER) Program. She will study environmental medicine/border health in Harlingen and Laredo, TX. January 2008—Michelle Zeager (EOH) was selected for a Pediatric Environmental Health Fellowship with Harvard University. Her host facility is the Pediatric Environmental Health Center at Children's Hospital Boston. Trained as a pediatrician, this the perfect complement to Michelle’s MPH in Environmental Health. She begins her three-year appointment in July. October 2007—Jessica Cohen (EPI) has been selected to serve as an ORISE Fellow in the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH). She begins her rotation in January and is the first USF COPH student selected for this fellowship. July 2007— Gina Sosa Betances (GH) received a fall internship with Pan American Health Organization. She will spend two months working with their communicable diseases program in Washington, DC. June 2007—Layebe (Caroline) Ignegongba (GH) secured an internship with Management Sciences for Health based in Arlington, VA. This fall she begins a 3-month placement examining pharmaceutical management issues. June 2007—Maunika Patel (HPP certificate) was selected from 75 students nationwide to participate in the 2007 Summer Enrichment Program offered by The Institute for Diversity in Health Management. She will engage in a 12-week paid internship with the VA of Northern Indiana in Ft. Wayne. May 2007—Karon Phillips (HPP) was awarded a summer internship with the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) in Washington, DC. Her three-month placement will focus on health disparities and cultural competence with in the office of policy integration. Karon will also attend a national conference on Diversity & Aging as a part of her internship. April 2007—Ligia Cruz (GH) received a summer internship with Pan American Health Organization. She will spend two months working with their tobacco control program in Washington, DC.
