USF SRNA Presents at VAD Workshop
The Pan American Workshop for Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Transplant was held in downtown Tampa, Florida at CAMLS November 30th & December 1st, 2012. The workshop, organized by FACT Surgery in Tampa and Messejana Hospital in Brazil, brought together renowned physicians from around the world to discuss advanced therapies for heart failure and incorporated both didactic and hands-on sections for attendees from North and South America.
Senior USF Nurse Anesthesia student Kelle Logan presented a podium lecture on the anesthetic implications for ventricular assist device patients. Over 250 attendees participated in didactic sections and witnessed live surgery transmitted from Tampa General Hospital to CAMLS. Surgeons had the opportunity to learn techniques on an isolated heart and by operating in the animal lab, implanting the ventricular assist device and/or performing a heart transplant.
The audience consisted of cardiothoracic surgeons, heart failure physicians, nurses, ventricular assist device coordinators and perfusionists. Kelle has also been invited to present her information at the Veteran Affairs for Nurse Anesthetists (AVANA) national meeting in Portland, Oregon in April.
