Doctor of Nursing Practice

BS-DNP Dual Occupational Health/Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Concentration

An Occupational Health/Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse with a graduate degree in nursing prepared to provide patient-centered, quality care to the adult and older adult population, including the frail elderly, across the wellness-illness continuum with a focus in Occupational Health (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2010; American Board for Occupational Health Nurses, Inc., 2012). Students who complete the program will be poised to provide primary care and to manage occupational related injuries and illnesses in a variety of acute and ambulatory care settings. Graduate preparation at the doctoral level prepares students to exercise advanced levels of clinical judgment, systems thinking, and responsibility and accountability in planning, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based strategies to improve individual patient and population health outcomes.

Graduates are prepared to sit for national certification as Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioners by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. They will also be eligible to sit for the Certified Occupational Health Nurse or the Certified Occupational Health Nurse – Specialist certification exams offered by the American Board of Occupational Health Nurses
