Introduction
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) are anesthesia specialists who administer approximately 32 million anesthetics to patients each year in the United States, according to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) 2008 Practice Profile Survey. CRNAs are the sole anesthesia providers in nearly half of all hospitals and more than two-thirds of the rural hospitals in the United States, affording these medical facilities obstetrical, surgical, and trauma stabilization capabilities which would be unattainable without CRNA services. Nurse anesthetists also serve our country by providing 100% of all anesthetics for the United States Army frontline facilities.
CRNAs practice in every setting in which anesthesia is delivered: traditional hospital surgical suites and obstetrical delivery rooms; critical access hospitals; ambulatory surgical centers; the offices of dentists, podiatrists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, and pain management specialists; and U.S. military, Public Health Services, and Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities. Further information about the role of nurse anesthetists may be found at The American Association of Nurse Anesthetist’s website: www.aana.com. The USF College of Nursing is well established, with an exceptional reputation in education and research. Upon successful completion of a 28-month, 72-credit academic and clinical curriculum, students are awarded a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia. USF’s Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia concentration is fully accredited by The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. In 2011, the program received the maximum ten year reaccreditation. Our overall pass rate is 100%, with a first time pass rate of 89%, an employment rate of 100%; our attrition rate is 11%. USF Nurse Anesthesia students will receive unique, cutting-edge training including the latest in high fidelity simulation, virtual OR practice, first choice in clinical placements, experiences at our state-of-the-art Center for Advanced Medical Learning Simulation (CAMLS), and mentorship by anesthesia leaders across the Tampa Bay region. The Nurse Anesthesia Program is classified as a Market Base Tuition program at USF. This is a 72 credit hour curriculum at approximately $800 per credit hour for tuition and fees.
