Our department was established in April 2006 due to the merger of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Medical Microbiology and Immunology Departments within the College of Medicine. Read more >

  • Dr. Gloria Ferreira has been awarded a new NIH grant “Ferrochelatase: does porphyrin distortion control metal ion specificity?” for the period April1, 2007 through March 31, 2011.  This new grant is in addition to a continuing NIH grant “5-Aminolevulinate Synthase and Heme Biosynthesis” that will run through January 2008.  Congratulations Dr. Ferreira – it’s well-deserved!
  • Simone Smith (Dr. Hassell’s student) successfully defended for her Ph.D. degree on 7/6/2007.  “The Proteoglycan Perlecan Regulates Long Bone Growth through Interactions with Developmental Proteins in the Growth Plate”.  Congratulations Dr. Smith
  • Apryl Quillen gave her Master’s Degree Directed Research Presentation on “The Pathology, Immunodiagnosis, and Eradication Efforts of Dracunculus medinensis (Guinea Worm Disease)”. 7/9/2007
  • Recently married Lindsey Jackson (now Mrs Boone…..Congratulations) successfully completed her Comprehensive Exam. “Regulation of HMG-CoA Reductase by Thyroid Hormone”.  7/10/2007
  • Zhigang (Mike) Yuan will defend on Friday August 10, 2007 at 9:00 am in MDL 1003.  “Function Characterization of Roles of Histone Deacetylases in the Regulation

Research and education in the Ph.D. in Medical Sciences Program, concentration in Molecular Medicine is focused on interdisciplinary approaches to the study of bacteriology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology and virology as it relates to human health and disease such as allergy and immune dysfunction, cancer, cardiovascular disorders, infectious diseases and inheritable defects.
