Opportunities & Resources

Numerous opportunities and resources are available for families and patients affected by diabetes. Realizing that you are not alone in the daily struggles of managing diabetes can be a comforting thought. Getting yourself connected and involved can greatly impact how well you are able to take care of your diabetes.

Camps- One of the most rewarding experiences available to children and teens with diabetes are the diabetes camps offered in Florida and the United States. These camps are staffed by health professionals and counselors and offer exciting activities and wonderful interactions with other kids with diabetes. Diabetes Camp is much more than just “camp.” In addition to the usual recreational activities associated with camping, scheduled diabetes education sessions are conducted by pediatric endocrinologists and diabetes educators at all programs. Caring individuals provide motivation and support for the children to learn self-care, independence in diabetes management and good self-esteem. www.floridadiabetescamp.org & www.diabetescamps.org.

Diabetes Events-The USF Diabetes Center along with community partners offer many diabetes events throughout the year in the Tampa Bay area. These include celebrity guest appearances, research updates, back to school events, summer activities and adult social events to name a few. In addition the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) also offer walks to help support a cure for diabetes.
