Dr. Sexton graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science in 1989 from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. He attended Emory University School of Medicine on an Air Force sponsored Health Professions Scholarship and completed his Medical Degree in 1993. General Surgery and Urology residency training was accomplished at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Having completed his residency in 1999, Dr. Sexton entered active duty military service with the United States Air Force and while on active duty, was selected to perform a Fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. From 2001-2004, Dr. Sexton served as the Director of Urologic Oncology with the 59th Medical Wing at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. In 2004 he completed his military service and accepted his current faculty appointment at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, where he is an Associate Member in the Genitourinary Oncology Program and an Associate Professor in the Department of Oncologic Sciences with the University of South Florida. Dr. Sexton also serves as the Urologic Oncology Fellowship Director at the Moffitt Cancer Center.
Dr. Sexton’s clinical interests include advanced robotics, laparoscopy, nephron-sparing renal procedures, and bladder cancer. Dr. Sexton also performs surgeries for advanced testis, kidney, prostate and penile malignancies. Since joining Moffitt, he has developed a robust experience with minimally invasive kidney procedures. His research interests include intravesical immunotherapies and topical chemotherapies for urothelial tumors, and biomarkers for diagnosis and response in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. His work has been published in numerous journals, including the Journal of Urology and the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Sexton is a native of Lake City, Tennessee. He is married to Angel Varsalona Sexton and is the father of three boys.
My research interests include intravesical therapies and biomarkers for diagnosis and response in superficial bladder cancer. My surgical interest include: surgery on the kidney, bladder, testis, prostate and penile malignancies. Advanced laparoscopy and nephron sparing renal procedures & bladder reconstruction, & nerve preservation.
