General Surgery Definition of Services
TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL
The TGH Blue service is Bariatric and endocrine surgery. It is under the direction of Dr. Michel Murr.
TGH-GREEN (PGY-5, PGY-1)
The Colorectal surgery service is staffed by Dr. Jorge Marcet and Dr. Jared Frattini.
TGH-GOLD A (PGY-5, PGY-3, PGY-1 x 2) and GOLD B (PGY-5, PGY-4, PGY-1)
This service consists of elective General Surgery, advanced laparoscopy, pancreaticobiliary, esophageal surgery. This service includes admissions and consults to Drs. Michael Albrink, Steven Goldin and Scott Gallagher.
TGH-PEDIATRIC SURGERY (PGY-3)
Pediatric surgery at TGH is under the direction of Dr. Charles Paidas and Dr. Mark Kayton.
TGH-TRAUMA (PGY-5, PGY-4 x 2, PGY-2 x 3, PGY-1 x 2)
The responsibilities of this service will include all admissions via the emergency room. The attending on the TGH ER General Surgery call schedule will admit patients presenting to the ER on his/her call day, to this service. This service will also care for the Hillsborough County Clinic patients and in-house consults for Drs. David Ciesla, David Shapiro, John Cha, and Luis Llerena.
TGH-Transplant (Transplant Fellow, PGY-3, PGY-1)
This service will cover all transplant cases at TGH. The faculty includes Drs. Angel Alsina, Victor Bowers, Bruce, John Leone, James Huang, and Than Nguyen
TGH-BURN SURGERY (PGY-1, Fellow)
The first year resident on the Burn Surgery rotation is responsible for the supervision of the Burn Unit patients admitted to Drs. Wayne Cruse, Rami Ghurani, David Smith, and Paul Smith.
TGH VASCULAR (PGY-3, PGY-1, PGY-6-Fellow)
This service will manage vascular patients. Attending physicians on this service are Drs. Dennis Bandyk, Martin Back, Brad Johnson, Paul Armstrong, and Murray Shames.
TGH ENT (PGY-4)
Residents on this service will participate in the workup, care and surgery of patients with head and neck disease. They will attend clinic and cover patients with Dr. Douglas Klotch. The resident on this service will also spend time performing basic and advanced endoscopies at the Haley VA.
JAMES A. HALEY VETERANS’ HOSPITAL
VA1 (General Surgery) (PGY-5, PGY-3, PGY-1)
Residents on this service participate in all aspects of general surgery in addition to surgical endoscopy. The attending physicians on this service are Drs. Lillian Dawes, Cynthia Karsonovich, Jose Lopez, Michael Perez and Steven Rakita.
VAII (Vascular Surgery) (PGY-5, PGY-1)
This patient population consists of vascular surgery patients. The attending physicians on this service are Drs. Back, Bandyk, Johnson, Shames and Armstrong.
VA-SICU/TPN (Surgical Intensive Care Unit) (PGY-2)
This service is a part of general surgery which emphasizes pre-op and post-op management of critically ill surgical patients as well as specialized nutrition support. Skills learned include use of Swan-Ganz catheters, management of ventilators, use of hemodynamic monitoring and inotropic medications. This service is under the direction of Dr. Peter Fabri and Dr. Lynnette Osterlund.
VAC (Chest Service) (PGY-2)
This service consists of patients with cardiac and pulmonary, diseases at the VA Hospital. The size of this service and the intensity of the patient population will allow the resident to become proficient in brochoscopy, mediastinoscopy, implantation of pacemakers, plus the pre-, intra-, and post-operative handling of cardiac and, pulmonary disease with a moderately large volume of patients. The attending physicians are Drs. Ernesto Jimenez, Stanley Kokocki, Arthur Larson, and Dimitri Novitzky
VA NIGHT FLOAT (PGY-2, PGY-1)
Residents on this service will function to provide 'call coverage' for the VAI, VAII, VAChest, and the surgical subspecialty services (Plastic Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Neurosurgery, Urology) on Monday through Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. and all day Sunday.
VA MEDICAL CENTER BAY PINES
BPVA (PGY-3 or 4)
The Surgery rotation at the VA Medical Center Bay Pines includes general surgery, thoracic, gynecology, and vascular surgery. Graded responsibility is provided commensurate with experience. Attendings include Drs. John Goodgame, Colleen Jakey, Scott McGuirt and Terry Wright.
H. LEE MOFFITT CANCER CENTER AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE
SURGICAL ONCOLOGY (PGY-4, PGY-3, PGY-2, PGY-1)
The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute has been established for, and dedicated to, specific care of cancer patients. Residents will be assigned to and primarily responsible for covering the GI, Breast, Melanoma or Thoracic surgery services. Attendings: Drs. Karl, Carter, Dessureault, Khakpour, Kiluk, Laronga, Lee, Malafa, Meredith, Shibata, Sommers, Alvelo-Rivera, and Yeatman.
