AY 2012-2013

Year 4 Requirements for Graduation

 

The elective year allows the student significant flexibility in selecting courses that is of importance to him/her. However, the following basic requirements must be met when designing the elective year:

1.       Students will select, with the aid of their faculty advisor, a sequence of eleven (11) 4-week periods as outlined below (a total of nine [9] required academic elective periods). Two 2-week electives may be substituted for one 4-week elective where allowed by the curriculum. Year-long courses (e.g. MEL 8965 Teaching Elective, MEL 8150 BRIDGE Clinic Elective, or MEL 8132 Outdoor Medicine Elective) will count as one 4-week rotation (An additional interview period (MEL INT) may be substituted in one 4-week period if a year-long course is scheduled unless make-up or remediation periods are required):

a.       Required courses that are part of their educational track (see page 2 for details)

b.       Other electives that may include:

·         Independent Study, Externship, and/or Scholarly Concentration Research periods

o   Students can participate in no more than 12 weeks total of combined independent studies, Scholarly Concentration Research, and externship courses.

o   Students can participate in no more than 8 weeks of independent study opportunities.

§  Students who choose to do independent studies must have their proposals and end products approved by the independent study preceptor, the department coordinator, and the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education.

·         2-7 electives (other than Independent Study/Externship)

o   Outside of their educational track requirements, students may schedule no more than 12 weeks in any one discipline. Exceptions to this policy require approval by the student’s advisor and the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education.

·         1 Interview Period (MEL INT) - optional

·         1 USMLE preparation period, additional interview period, or remediation period.  See below for remediation/make-up policy.(MEL INT)- optional

 

 

Required Remediation/Make-Up

For various reasons students may be required to remediate or makeup course work during the senior elective year. These requirements will be met as specified by each department under the following guidelines:

·         All third year requirements must be completed prior to the start of fourth year course work.  Any exceptions must be approved by the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education. With the approval of Dr. Stevenson, students may enroll in a fourth year course if their only deficiency is the retake of a third year clerkship examination. If approved, that student may be enrolled in a fourth year course while preparing for the examination at the conclusion of that rotation period.

·         No more than 8 weeks of the elective year may be used for remediation without affecting the date of graduation. This time can only replace study or interview time and will not be counted as one of the nine required elective periods. Any more time may result in delayed graduation. Fourth year courses may not be taken until after remedial/make-up requirements have been completed and all third year requirements have been met

DERMATOLOGY

REQUIRED:

1.       MEL 8334 Acting Internship in Internal Medicine (4 weeks)

2.       BCC 8116 Skin and Bones (4 weeks)

3.       MEL 8321 Clinical Dermatology (4 weeks)

 

EMERGENCY MEDICINE

REQUIRED:

1.       BCC 7114 Emergent/Urgent Care (4 weeks to be taken in Year 3)

2.       MEL 8347 Adult Emergency Medicine, which functions as an AI (4 weeks)

3.       BCC 8190 Critical Care (4 weeks)

4.       Clinical selectives (4 weeks) – choices include: MEL 8303 Consultative Cardiology, MEL 8501 Medical Ophthalmology, MEL 7760 Anesthesiology, BCC 8116 Skin and Bones, MEL  8678 Vascular Neurology (stroke service), MEL 8704 Diagnostic Radiology

 

FAMILY MEDICINE

REQUIRED:

1.       MEL 8251 Acting Internship in Family Medicine at Morton Plant Mease or Bayfront  (4 weeks)

2.       BCC 8190 Critical Care - (4 weeks)

3.       BCC 8116 Skin and Bones (4 weeks)

4.       Clinical Selective (4 weeks)  - student may choose any clinical elective, as approved by advisor

 

GENERAL SURGERY

This track is for students selecting general surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, urology, and may be selected by students entering anesthesia

REQUIRED:

1.       MEL 8811 Acting Internship in General Surgery or MEL 7805 Trauma Surgery (4 weeks)

2.       AI Selective (4 weeks) - choices include: MEL 8811 General Surgery Acting Internship, MEL 7805 Trauma Surgery Acting Internship, MEL 7803 Plastic Surgery Acting Internship, MEL 7822 Urology Acting Internship, MEL 7828 Vascular Surgery Acting Internship, MEL 7816 Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

3.       BCC 8190 Critical Care  (4 weeks)

4.       MEL 7815 Advanced Surgical Skills: Surgical Intern Preparedness (4 weeks)

BMS 8187 Advanced Human Anatomy

 

INTERNAL MEDICINE

This track is for students selecting Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, or Radiation Oncology

REQUIRED:

1.       BCC 7114 Emergent/Urgent Care (4 weeks)

2.       MEL 8334 Acting Internship or MEL 9940 Honors AI in Internal Medicine (4 weeks)

3.       BCC 8190 Critical Care (4 weeks)

4.       Clinical Selectives (4 weeks) -  may take two 2-week electives or one 4-week elective from the below list of options:

4.       Clinical Selective (4 weeks) – choices include: MEL 8677 Outpatient Neurology, MEL 8305 Clinical Endocrinology, MEL 7701 Neuroradiology,  MEL 8673 Senior Elective in Epilepsy. This can be a single 4-week elective or two 2-week electives.

5.       Basic Science Selectives (2 weeks) BMS xxxx Pharmacogenomics and Psychosocial Aspects of Patient Care or BMS xxxx Integration of Brain Networks, Dimensions of Behavior, and Modern Therapeutics

 

RADIOLOGY

REQUIRED:

1.    Two 4-week rotations, selected from the following: MEL 8334 Acting Internship in Internal Medicine, MEL 8811 Acting Internship in General Surgery, and BCC 8190 Critical Care.

2.     MEL 8704 Diagnostic Radiology elective (4 weeks)
