The elective year allows the student significant flexibility in selecting courses that is of importance to him/her. However, the following basic requirements must be met when designing the elective year:

  1. All students who have not taken the Urgent & Emergent Care Clerkship in the third year are required to complete this clerkship in the 4th year.
  2. Students will select, with the aid of their faculty advisor, a sequence of eleven (11) four-week periods as outlined below (a total of nine [9] required academic elective periods) :

a. Required courses that are part of their educational track (see page 3 for details)

b. Other electives that may include:

  • 3 Independent Study, Externship, and/or Scholarly Concentration Research periods
  • Students can participate in no more than two (2) months of independent study opportunities.
  • Students who choose to do independent studies must have their proposals and end products approved by the independent study preceptor, the department coordinator, and the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education.
  • Students can participate in no more than three (3) externships OR three (3) months of scholarly concentration research.
  • 2-7 electives (other than Independent Study/Externship)
  • Outside of their educational track, students may schedule no more than three (3) courses in any one discipline. Exceptions to this policy require approval by the student's advisor and the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education.
  • 1 Interview Period
  • 1 USMLE preparation period, additional interview period, or remediation period. See below for remediation/make-up policy.

Required Remediation/Make-Up
For various reasons students may be required to remediate or make-up course work during the senior elective year. These requirements will be met as specified by each department under the following guidelines:

  1. No more than eight weeks of the elective year may be used for remediation without affecting the date of graduation. This time can only replace study or interview time and will not be counted as one of the nine required elective periods. Any more time may result in delayed graduation. Only after remedial/make-up requirements have been completed may the Independent Study/Externship periods and regular elective courses be scheduled.
  2. All third year requirements must be successfully completed prior to beginning the elective year.   All exceptions to this must be approved by the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education.
